May 25, 200422 yr Hi I'm new to win xp...holdover from win98. Just had to upgrade my system and I upgraded to fs2004. Question I have is how do you install fs2004 to just a single user. I tried installing it already and it appeared on all users desktops. I know it's something simple.Thanx...morand :-hmmm :-hmmm
May 25, 200422 yr Well you really can't. XP's concept of the 'user' is far from perfect. However, if you want a single user to be the only one to use FS2004, remove any mention of FS2004 from the c:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDesktop and Start Menu folders. This will keep FS2004 from being able to be executed by a casual user; however they will still be able to navigate to the FS2004 install folder and execute it from there.Lets hope the next version of Windows has more unix/linux like users, that way a admin is truely an admin, and applications can be controlled strictly for those who need it.
May 25, 200422 yr Thanks Fred...I guess then install it under the the specific userie...c:documents and settingsmoranddesktop...and that should do the trick.morand
May 25, 200422 yr If you want only you to execute, open the properties on the folder for FS9, go to security, and set access only for your user account. Or, right click on the fs9.exe, go to security, and set execute access only for your user. Not to start any OS wars, but XP can be as security restrictive as any unix system. I fault application developers/install packages that do not set security for the user during the install. I am guilty of this since my programs install into the Program Files folder by default, which is open to all users. I also fault Microsoft in that the security for XP (especially Home) is "dumbed down" and has to be "enabled" to access the good stuff like what I mentioned. Now you could setup a different Program Files folder that as only access to your user and install your apps that you want to restrict there. This is up to the user.I think the problem is that we the desktop user only got this type of security starting with Windows 2000. So the paradigm that most Windows users have is not security oriented. *nix systems, OTOH, never had an open security model like DOS/Windows, so your approach to it is different.Back to work...:-)
May 25, 200422 yr I didn't realize you could do that Ken....well thats one less thing the next version of windows has to do to get the user idea done right.
May 25, 200422 yr Thanks for the security info. Actually what I'm after is the path to instlall fs2004 to only one user so it doesn't appear on the other users desktops. Whenever I use the default installation it appears on all desktops. When I try to remove the shortcuts it removes them from all profiles. What am I doing wrong?Thanks...morand
May 25, 200422 yr Move the shortcuts from the All Users folder to the specifc users folder in the Documents and settings folder.
May 25, 200422 yr I don't believe there is any way to stop how it installs iteself. It puts the shortcuts in the "Documents and SettingsAll Users" folder hierarchy which causes it to show up in all users' desktops and start menus. Some software has a radio button to control this install behaviour, but I don't recall FS9 providing this. What you need to do is simply move the folders from All Users to the specific userid you want the program to appear on.Under Documents and SettingsAll UsersDesktop move the shortcutto Documents and SettingsuseridDesktop , and then moveDocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuMicrosoft Games toDocuments and SettingsuseridStart MenuIt may be necessary to set windows explorer to show hidden and system files to see these. When you start FS9, additional files will be created within the specific userid that you logged in under when starting the progam.scott s..
May 26, 200422 yr That worked..Thanks Scott. Also moved a couple of other programs around while I was at it. Next stop tips and tricks forum. Thanks again.....morand:)
