How hard it is to Flatten Mesh in X-Plane 10?

Featured Replies

The Mesh that comes with X-Plane V10 has an obvious flaw specifically around the city of Rio de Janeiro. That really affects me, since that's where I live, and where most Brazilians are likely to do their Simming, along with other main cities. If you don't believe me, try go for a quick flight taking off from Santos Dumont (SBRJ) and see for yourself.

Since Mesh in X-Plane is much more complex than the usual people are used to from FSX, I don't believe there's going to be anyone doing a better mesh for Brazil any time soon, so the solution I came up with is to Flatten the area of the Flaw, it's better to look Flat and have an airport I can use than to have absurd looking hills and an airport sitting on top of a cliff. The area I want to Flatten is very small, just around the airport, I don't want to get rid of the whole city's mountains, which is one of the things that makes it so beautiful.

Does anyone with X-Plane scenery experience knows how to do it, and can maybe send me a link with a tutorial or something?

Thank you for your time!

The only way I can think of is to convert the dsf file to a text file using Ben's tool DSF2txt.exe (http://scenery.x-plane.com/tools.php) and manually changing the elevation figures.

Tedious no doubt but seems to be the only way that is publicly available todate.

All this is assuming the dsf2txt tool works on the current dsf files as bundled with v10. Haven't used that tool in a while, so I am not sure.

Good luck with your efforts and do keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you but Im pretty sure that's way beyond my skills as a user! I can use WED and that's about it

Thanks for the suggestion. Didn't work with V10, probably because the mesh is made for V9, it's as if nothing changed when I replaced the files. I will try contacting the author of this mesh to see if he has time to make a similar version for V10

Just found out there's a Brazilian group called BR-X that's soon making the Fix available for X-Plane Users. I will post the link here when it's released.

That's great, the default scenery looks worse than the default New Orleans area with its amusement park road system.
