Another New to FSX Build Question

Featured Replies

Folks,

A co-worker and I got to chatting about FSX while on a recent trip, and he was gushing over the cool factor on the PMDG 737NGX. Since this is an aircraft near and dear to my heart, I set out to learn more about FSX, as I've been a long time lurker on the forum, but never really got around to building a world-class FSX platform. My question is, (I can't seem to find a definitive answer, and search gives me some sort of ODBC error) what processor should I build a machine around for using the PMDG NGX? Needless to say, I'm going to want the most realistic experience, so lots of scenery, real-time WX, etc... So far in my reading, FSX is much more dependant on the CPU than GPU, so the question is, Ivy or Sandy? Which motherboard, GPU, etc?

I'm set on using SSD for the OS and FSX drive, and have an 800 watt power supply, other than that, I'm a blank sheet of paper. What should I buy? I'm not overly worried about budget, but also don't want to spend 3K on a machine.

I'm truly grateful for any advice...

-Will

Ivy, any Z77 board, GTX 670 or better. Don't forget fast RAM too, Ivy was made to be overclocked with fast RAM. 2400 or better will do the trick though 2133 is a good spot as long as you have tight timings. I have 2133 RAM currently and had to loosen timings to maintain stability, so I decided to get the fastest stuff I could find to really support my overclock and not hold the system back in any way and ordered some 2800 RAM. I'll see what speed my CPU can handle the RAM at and compare FSX results and post back in the FSXMark 11 thread before the week is out, hopefully.
