GT 525M Overclocking Advice (Dell XPS 15z)

Featured Replies

Hello all,

In a recent topic elsewhere on the hardware boards I posted a question about affinity mask on the i5-2430m, where I was trying to improve my somewhat poor performance in FSX. We came to a conclusion that my CPU was fine, but rather my GPU was a bottleneck, and that was the cause of my low FPS. The GT525m has shown to be a fairly poor card for today's standards. Now, I know a laptop does not have sufficient power to deliver high FPS consistently with all of the addons that I use, however I do believe I can get a bit more than 10 FPS on the ground in the NGX in busy airports if I were to get the most out of my hardware.

So...this is where the question comes in

I've never overclocked anything before. I'm not the most tech savy person alive, however I would consider myself well above average. I'm wondering if it is SAFE to overclock the GT525m on my system, the XPS 15z. I've tried to look around but there doesn't seem to be a clear answer for my particular system; usually most people talk about the XPS 15. The heating is an issue on my system. The CPU can reach around 85 Celsius under load. The GPU reaches around 60-70 under a typical FSX heavy load. Idles are 45-50 and 40 on my CPU and GPU respectively. To combat this I bought the Cooler Master Notepal U3 which just arrived yesterday. I haven't done any tests in FSX yet but it did reduce my idle temps by a few degrees. My main concern is that overclocking the GPU will increase temps too high...and in the case that the GPU and CPU share the same heat sink (I'm not sure if they do) that the CPU will increase as well. I do not want the CPU to increase any higher than it is. However I read around and one person said it's very safe to OC the 525m on the 15z, and others advise against it. Not sure who to believe.

I'm stuck in between my desire for better performance and fear of ruining my laptop. I'm not in the best position to buy a new rig right now so I would like to try and pull the most out of my current one right now. I've downloaded MSI Afterburner and will likely use that. I'd only increase the Core and Shader clocks as I've seen that speeding the memory up can cause issues. Basically I'm just looking for some good advice as to what to do.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards
