Will the new "Queen of the Skies" arrive this month ?
Maybe, just maybe, it will be ready for Cross the Pond. Patience with PMDG is a must, but it's well worth it.

I don't think we'll see it for a while, understandably so. All great things take time.

T Allensworth memorial flight sign up
Excellent idea. If nothing comes up that day I'll try and take part. Name: Matthew Kraemer (i_am_canadian737) Aircraft: A2A C172 C-GQCU (VFR conditions permitting) I was wondering, perhaps we could all chip in a few donations for cancer research in Tom's honour?

Germanwings 4U9525 dissapears over the Alps
http://www.ctvnews.ca/business/new-cockpit-policy-for-air-canada-1.2298727 Airlines are already springing into action with policy changes. This is a horrific incident regardless of the cause. While I respect that suicide and mental illness is a problem only comprehensible by the person experiencing it, there is absolutely NO excuse to kill other innocent people along with oneself. We have seen events like these in the past. I think the only true effective solution is to target the root causes of mental illness. That would not explain the premature descent command on the MCP. I hate speculation and I truly do wish to believe that it was a freak accident and that there was no malicious intent, but sadly the evidence they've released so far points towards a deliberate downing. Regardless, the focus should be on the families of those involved. Nothing will give solace to their terrible loss.

Question regarding pricing
Hello all, Like many, I am considering moving from FSX to P3D. I'm in the process of determining the total costs before proceeding. As I would like to take advantage of PMDG's discounts on the 737 and 777, my research has been accelerated by the impending "deadline." Canadians such as myself are, as some may know, suffering from the Canadian dollar, which is currently at a record low. Thus, I am curious; are the prices in the PMDG shop listed in USD? I cannot remember if they were when I originally ordered the 737 for FSX. Thanks, Matthew Kraemer

FSX Crashes when switching to desktop
Hi all, I've noticed an issue lately with FSX crashing when using alt-tab, or clicking anywhere in the dekstip in windowed mode. It seems FSX does not get along well with Windows 8/8.1's desktop. If I make it to the desktop and the Sim doesn't crash, trying to switch back into the Sim always results in a black screen, forcing me to end the flight. On occasion,I'll accidentally hit the windows key instead of the alt, which causes a crash or black screen. Is anyone else experiencing this issue with Windows 8.1, and/or is there a known fix?

Which addons should i buy for 120 dollars
Both the 182 and 172 are excellent products and are nearly on par in this sense. It really comes down to whether you want to fly the fixed-pitch 172 or the faster and heavier variable-pitch 182. Also, I agree with the posts above- FTX Global and ASN are excellent choices. I highly recommend ASN over REX's weather engine as it is a much more effective weather engine. As well, it includes various effects such as visibility changes when flying through clouds- very immerse.

Boeing vs. Airbus cockpit environment battle
I'm going on a comparison of the Airbus X and PMDG NGX. The Airbus sounds more modern and sophisticated, essentially it sounds European. I particularly enjoy the dings and beeps of, for example, the master caution alarm. However, I love the mechanical sounds of the 737 (fuel pumps and hydraulics...love that sound, especially on the real bird over the wings). In FSX, I think the PMDG soundset is overall higher in quality than the Airbus X, but they each have their own unique feelings.

Need advice on a New Computer
Cygnus_X1 replied to jetsmell's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcThere is a nice guide here by NickN that explains in great detail how to pick the best components for an FSX PC and how to set it up. It's a long read, and sometimes there's more information than what you need overall, but it's an informative read. I found it useful when picking my new rig. The others are right- put your money in a good processor. However, don't completely skimp out on the GPU. Nvidia pairs best with Intel, specifically for rendering clouds in FSX. Good luck with your new rig, it will be worth the time spent researching.

737 running out of memory
I assume you have both FSDT KLAX and KLAS? What other scenery are you using? Are you using REX or another weather package? Traffic? Are you forcing 4096 size textures? If you are using any or all of these things, your memory usage will skyrocket, especially between those two airports. Try adjusting your settings, and monitor your memory usage to see the results. Also, I would advise against WIN8.1...as an operating system, it works fine after getting used to it, but it doesn't seem to get along every well with FSX. I have a few issues with it, ranging fro the well known controller disconnect issue to crashing whenever I try and access the desktop while the sim is running, so I would recommend sticking with Windows 7 for now.

Low fps
If you open the task manager (Ctl Alt Delete) and go to the Performance tab, it should show a graph of all of your processor cores. If it's down quite low while using FSX, you have a problem. You should also check the temperature of your computer components using something like HWMonitor CPUID to be sure. Your specs are decent enough, you should be getting slightly better frames than that at the very least. I'm not very familiar with AMD processors but I do know they are not as effective as Intel processors when it comes to FSX. Make sure you've configured REX such that you're not using the max size HD textures, because those bog down any system, regardless of specs.

Low fps
I had a similar issue when I used to fly using my laptop. My CPU was overheating, and so it would throttle itself to a very low clock speed. Check to make sure that your CPU is running at its normal frequency after loading the 777X or NGX. Clean your vents free of dust etc. Might help.

How do you like to start your flights? (Poll)
I've always been curious of how many people start from cold and dark. I tend to simulate most flights such that the aircraft in in a turn around state, so I start from there. I don't think I've done a cold and dark for a long time...except in the A2A 172.

Aviation Colleges With Bachelors Degree+Commercial License
If you were willing to move to Canada, a few universities here offer combined CPL and Bachelor degree programs, for example, The University of Waterloo offers a Bachelor of Science and Aviation program, as well, The University of Western Ontario has a Business and Aviation program. There are some Colleges that offer aviation diplomas such as Moint Royal University and Selkirk College. For the longest time I had my heart set on Waterloo's program, as it combines a B.Sc and completes your CPL with multi engine and IFR (I believe so, could be wrong) all in 4 years...however one thing you must consider with these programs is the cost, financially and logistically. Programs that combine licenses and degrees often cost upwards of $120k. For me, Waterloo would've meant moving across the country and living away from home almost full time (as most of the flying is done in the summer)...at 17, it's not really something I felt I was quite ready for. I elected to attend a University a little closer to home and do my flight training separately in the summers back in my home city. Currently I'm doing my PPL and will he going to University in the fall. Do your research for sure. It's a big decision on where you'll go for school, one that you don't want to take lightly. Consider all the expenses and logistics of moving to a new school. Alos consider whether or not you want an abiaiton degree... While It's generally recommended (and almost required)that you get a 4 year college/university degree to reach the major airlines, it generally doesn't matter if it's an aviation related degree. Some pilots advise against aviation degrees- if the degree is your back-up plan, you're using it because the airlines aren't hiring...if the aiines aren't hiring, it probably means the aviation industry is in a downturn...so your aviation degree won't help. For that reason and others, I elected to go into Engineering. Good for you for starting your research now. You're already at a good start if you are thinking about your schooling and career at this age, especially for flying. Best of luck. Poll: What Is Your Favourite Commercial Jet/ What Region Prefers What Manufacturer?
Hello all, I'm always curious as to what aircraft people generally like the most. What I also find interesting is that generally, people from certain regions prefer certain aircraft- for example, it seems that most Europeans favour Airbus over Boeing, while North Americans favour Boeing over Airbus. Out of pure interest, I'm putting this theory to the test! In the poll, I was limited to 20 answers per question, so I had to group certain aircraft together, hopefully in a logical way. I only included jet aircraft and aircraft that are currently in service (i.e. no A350, A320neo, 737MAX, etc at the time of writing). For me, my all-time favorite aircraft family is the Boeing 737NG. I am from North America, (Canada, to be exact ^_^) and overall I'd have to say I prefer Boeing, although the A320 is growing on me. Thanks for your participation in this survey! If you have any thoughts to add, I'd love to hear them.

So...what's the general consensus on FSX on Windows 8.1?
Hello all, I am currently looking in to getting a new system specifically for FSX. I've decided to buy a pre-built as I am very busy this summer with work, PPL training, and preparing for University this fall; thus, I do not have the time to learn how to build and overclock my own system. The point is, this system that I have decided on runs Windows 8.1, which I've heard mixed reviews of. Searching around AVSIM and various other forums often turns up mixed results for me; some people have no issues whatsoever, and some people have horrifying CTDs and Joystick issues...but there never seems to be a clear message as to whether or not FSX generally runs stable on 8.1. Does anybody have some food for thought on this issue? Is it critical that I steer clear of 8.1 or should I be okay to "bite the bullet?" Thanks in advance ^_^

RIP Laptop! Motherboard dead. Advice on a new desktop?
Cygnus_X1 replied to Cygnus_X1's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcHello, thanks for your replies It turns out that my laptop's issues was not a dead motherboard, rather it was "malicious software." I'm not too sure what caused it, perhaps I accidentally installed a program from a sketchy source and/or accidentally visited a sketchy website. Either way, a technician is taking a look at it and wiping/restoring the hdd. So, I suppose once I get it back, I'll be with the laptop for a while, provided there are no other issues. I'm paranoid that I've been hacked, and am thus taking care of my personal info more closely. Needless to say, when I do eventually get a desktop, I will build- or at least configure- my own. Memory Express is a great store, I agree. Their online configuration seems to suit my needs. To shift gears a bit, now that I'm paranoid about security, what antivirus suite/software is recommended for use with fsx? I had been using MSE and Malwarebytes, but had no firewall- I installed Comodo firewall, coincidentally just before my laptop's issues started occurring...what programs are recommended that provide significant protection, while not interfering with fsx/taking up too many cpu cycles? Thanks again, everyone

RIP Laptop! Motherboard dead. Advice on a new desktop?
Hello all, Just in time for my exams, my two year old laptop's motherboard died. I was planning on buying a desktop later this year (unsatisfied with my current performance, which, I must admit is surprisingly okay for my specs...but it is showing its age), so I suppose now is as good a time as ever to buy the desktop, as the repair for the laptop will likely be $500+ I guess you could say, in terms of my knowledge of computers, I'm slightly above average- but no more than that. I understand all of the basic components of a computer and their functions, however I lack the skill and/or knowledge to build my own computer successfully. Being a student in my final year of high school, I lack the time to really dive deep into the research involved with building a computer, so obviously a pre-built system looks attractive to me. That being said, I know that customizing my own system will provide me with the maximum performance/cost ratio. My concern is picking the right components; I'm worried that I may make a mistake, such as buying a motherboard that limits my overclocking, or a cheap power supply, or something that I don't know too much about that may compromise my performance. In other words, I'm scared of being a noob! Once again I've gone on and on in a wordy question, so the TLDR version is this: -Would this pre-built system (link below) be sufficient? (the attractive feature here is the "push-of-a-button overclocking, which I've read the max is 4.1 ghz. Also, I'm split between people's opinions on the gtx770 vs 780..NickN's guide states that there is "no exception" to the 780...is this really true?) http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/asus-asus-g30-desktop-pc-intel-core-i7-4770k-3tb-hdd-128gb-ssd-16gb-ram-windows-8-g30ab-ca005s/10254784.aspx?path=0a588d48a4690f4fb4a3f9d612dd02faen02 -Or, is biting the bullet and building my own the absolute best way to go? I suppose that, either way, the performance boost that I'll receive will be well worth it compared to my current laptop (specs on the side <--). In fact, because the laptop is now dead, I suppose it's a matter of good performance vs no performance at all! Thank-you all in advance, I can never truly express how much I appreciate the help that the AVSIM community gives me! ^_^

Is the switch to P3DV2 worth it? Looking to buy a new PC
I appreciate everyone's input. Seems like it is early in the game to make the switch and P3D, while promising, has a long way to go. However I do feel that eventually, P3D will be the future of flight simming. I want to make sure I'm future proofing my system for that future switch to P3D, so is a GTX780 absoiltelt critical, or can I get away with a 770 and still have most things maxed out? For reference, the exact system I'm looking at is here: http://m.futureshop.ca/defaultpage.aspx?lang=en#/catalog/productdetails.aspx?ajax=true&sku=10254784〈=en-CA
