How hard would it be for a guage designer to do this???

Featured Replies

I've been wondering this for awhile... With all the LCD gauges (PFD, ND displays etc.) I've seen depicted for the Heavies in FS, how hard would it be for them to actually make the gauges look like LCD screens??? At present the gauges have a basic look contrary to what you see if you saw them in a real cockpit. These gauges digital readouts at night have a slight glow or luminance that traditional gauges don't have (this is true even during the day). It

Good point! actually, the glow at night may most likely be visible on CRT based display than LCD based I guess (well to the extent it really glows a lot). The other thing is that these screens are supposed to be surface coated to avoid reflection I guess as well. So any "reflective" effect would spoil what these screens are made of to some extent.Last but not least, the only display technology which tries to recreates the "look and feel" of such screens, is the one best desccribed in here:http://www.reality-xp.com/community/articles/1003.htmHope this helps!

"The other thing is that these screens are supposed to be surface coated to avoid reflection"This may be true but it looks so much better in FS when the gauges are programmed to look like digital display screens versus what's done now. They actually look more like a drawing versus a digital readout. I don't think the slight sun glare that PSS models in the A330/340 produce an unrealistic effect in any way. The reflection doesn't take away from the ability to read the screen, what it does is give the effect of a plastic window with a display behind it. This is what these gauges need because this is what you see in real life. The look of our current PFD/ND displays in FS2k4 is very unrealistic. In the pic you can see the glare from the windows on the PFD/ND dispalys. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/81322.jpg
