July 1, 200421 yr For some reason, even after re-installing FS 4 times, I get a" Microsoft Flight Simulator has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error. The last thing I did before this happend was install three files trying to get a 777 to work: boeing_777-232er_delta_air_lines_nc_02_06_04sound_142748777dlx6I dont know if these files have anything to do with the crashing, since I destroyed them and it still crashes. My only next option is to reformat my harddrive. But I really don't have the patience to transfer the gigabytes of add-ons etc over. I'm realy peeved that it doesn't run at all. Does anyone know of a way I could narrow down the error since it's so vague?
July 1, 200421 yr Author Moderator When you "re-installed" FS, did you simply "overwrite" the existing installation? That will almost never accomplish what you want, since the "problem" is most likely in the FS9.cfg file, or the "previous flight.flt" file.Try deleting the "previous flight.flt" file first, 'cause it isn't any big loss... :)If that doesn't do the trick, copy the keyboard assignments from the existing FS9.cfg file to a temp file, and then delete the FS9.cfg entirely.Start the sim and allow FS to rebuild a 'default FS9.cfg' file for you. If all goes well, then simply copy/paste the keyboard assignments you saved to the new FS9.cfg file. Fr. July 1, 200421 yr I first installed it into a different folder, didn't work, then I completey wiped the original Fs folder, backing up some stuff, then installed again, still no go. But I never did delete the files in the documents folder.
July 1, 200421 yr If you have NSW or something similar, be sure to "check" Windows itself, especially for any pesky misplaced active_x components...Failing that, If you have system restore enabled, try that before making any more modifications (only because it's painfully easy).Failing that (as suggested earlier) wipe out all traces of any prior installation; make sure ALL the programme folders are gone (including documents & settings "user"). Then go into regedit & delete these KEYS:1)HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrostMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator9.02)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrostMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator9.0Now start over, I would try your conditions under "safe mode" & see if you can trump anything that way.Cheers.
July 1, 200421 yr You only need to reinstall Windows if Windows is falling over. As it's the sim that won't run, don't reinstall it. You will end up creating more problems than you solve. The problem most likely is in the fs9.cfg or one of the other files that uninstall doesn't remove. My guess is that you changed the very aircraft that was in your previous flight. That is known to cause problems. Allcott
July 1, 200421 yr Why would you give someone this kind of advise if it's an application that is failing and not the OS? Be careful what you tell people.Dave

Alex, in the vast majority of cases where FS9 won't load, it's because of a problem with the "previous flight.flt" file. What folks don't realize is that FS9 will attempt to "pre-load" from that specific file, even before you get to the first "Menu," where you now have the options to "Create a Flight," etc. Hence, if there is a problem with the file itself, or the a/c that the file refers to!, FS9 will fall over dead... :(Thus, in most cases one should begin by simply deleting that one, single file, and that will solve the problem. In many cases, reinstalling software is like trying to fix a car with a tank full of bad gasoline by replacing the engine first... :) Fr.
