Compressed Clouds and the "Cloud of Doom"

Featured Replies

Hello,

I purchased OpusFSX just yesterday and i'm experiencing a few issues. The most important (and the major reason why i purchased OpusFSX) has to do with weather and clouds. I am getting about 90% of "compressed" and stretched unrealistic clouds on most of my flights. Sometimes there are nice fluffly clouds, but they're so scattered that look like small cotton balls spread throughout the sky - This happens more at high altitude.

In this picture, you can see what i mean about "compressed" and stretched clouds:

They have no volume, and when i cross them, they're completely flat (not 3D). They look like layers. Is this an issue with my cloud theme (i used REX for the graphics) or related to some settings within OpusFSX? I am using the latest BETA version. My settings on FSX are 80 mile visibility, medium coverage clouds and 3D detailed clouds.

The other issue i'm experiencing, even after installing the provided cumulus_03 bitmap, is the cloud of doom. I am currently flying at FL390, and there she is, with me all the way, about 3000ft above me. Sometimes it flashes as it is redrawn, while the rest of the clouds below maintain a steady and smooth flow.

The last problem i'm experiencing (probably bad configuration?) is that i cannot get that "head bump" experience. I have enabled it and disabled it and enabled it again in the menu, but it doesn't seem to work. Am i missing some setting here, did i accidentaly skip some part of the manual?

Thank you, the weather simulation is stunning, i just have to solve these cloud type issues and it'll be flawless. Superb job with this addon.

Suggestion: Allow us to install it somewhere else, other than C:\OpusFSX and simplify the interaction with the server and clients. It seems a little confusing as it is sometimes, i don't have a clear idea what i need to setup to make things work.

Thanks a lot!

Nuno

Hi Nuno

They look like perfectly normal low lying stratus clouds.

They are there either as a result of being defined in the METARs as very low lying cloud (cumulus are not usually very low lying) or you have the fog and mist effects in the Weather dialog enabled. FSX does not render fog banks and areas of low lying mist at all, so these areas are automatically topped in a thin layer of stratus so you can see them. Very similar to what you would see if there were a fog bank.

Change the settings to suit your personal preference but I would advise against disabling the fog effects. It's very handy to see areas of fog below you. I personally have the mist effects disabled and leave the fog enabled.

There is nothing wrong with your settings nor with your textures. Stratus are generally flattened out and smoother looking, especially when looking down on them. If they are there to top and make fog layers visible then they will be even thinner.

What you see above you is cirrus cloud, cloud base above 40,000 feet normally. This to is perfectly normal (try Googling stratus cloud, then cirrus cloud). You will also find an option in the Weather dialog to enable/disable cirrus cloud. I generally look out of the window and just set the cirrus cloud either on or off to suit my local conditions, or just turn it on or off depending on your liking. If you live in an area that usually has clear blue skies then I suppose it may look strange, but cirrus is a very common high altitude cloud types.

To get the DHM effects you must first create a virtual cockpit camera view. All the camera head effects are associated with camera views and not just enabled or disabled generally. Are you flying the PMDG 737NGX, if so we have a CAM file on our downloads page. You will also find instructions on the downloads page on how to install the camera views. The captain, first officer, and MCP panel views each have the full DHM effects enabled. All you will need to do is assign your joystick inputs for each view to select the view when flying.

Finally, you can install it on any drive but it must be in the OpusFSX folder. This was done deliberately to simplify networked file access, minimise problems with setting up sharing etc.

Hope that helps, remember to google those cloud types and consider the CAM file for your PMDG 737NGX.

Regards

Stephen

I can't thank you enough for your FAST and great support Stephen, i have read your reply carefully, will investigate about what i really want for my simulation and set the options accordingly. This was mostly misinformation from me, thanks for clarifying this up.

I will try with those different settings for Cirrus and see what suits me best.

Thanks again,

Nuno

No problem Nuno

If you have any problems with installing the CAM file just let me know via the forum or email it doesn't really matter. Or, have a go at creating a Default virtual cockpit camera view for yourself. Name the view (e.g. B737 - Captain), assign your aircraft types (select all B737 including PMDGs), enable the Default and DHM options, open the DHM dialog and make sure everything is enabled, open the AHM dialog and do the same, then back out and click on Save All Camera Views before closing the Cameras dialog.

Don't forget to check out those cloud types, cirrus can add to the eye candy effect.

I got it working, and i'm now playing with the cloud types with REXE. It will take some time, but i'll get the theme to my liking.

Thank you, this is really a great product!

Many thanks Nuno

Also try out the freeware HDEv2 clouds (great storm clouds - Jean-Paul's images), only the clouds that is, although there is another link for other compatible sky textures. I like a bit of variety on my system including FEX. It's all eye candy.
