Need Some Tech Help Please? OT?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

OT I know, but need some advice....

It seems someone or something has gained access to one of my email accounts, and now loads of people are telling me they're getting SPAM from me.

Can anyone tell me how this happens, and whether just changing my password will fix it?

cheers

Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)

I've had that happen to me! Wondered why I was sending emails to myself, with two accounts?

First I'd make sure your system is squeaky clean via a couple, three scans for malware, viruses and those kinds of things.

Second, go and change the password used on the "spamming account" My spammer account was on Hotmail and it took a bit to reset things, but it effectively cured the problem.

Third, let the recipients know that although the emails may say they are from you, they may not be from you. Once data is harvested it can be spooked through other accounts, so even though it reads from Phil it may be coming from Igor in some weird part of the world.

I recently received an email from a family member that I don't hear much from. It was spam. It's funny as the family member does work around computers, networks, security, etc for the U.S. Govt/Military and is well compensated for the work. Bottom line is, it can happen to most anybody.
