Building a new FSX rig

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. Im piecing together a new rig for flightsim, need some pointers and ideas about a few of the parts.

CPU

Intel i5 3570K (to be overclocked hopefully to 4.2)

MOBO

ASUS p8z77-V Pro

RAM

8GB Patriot Gamer 2 series DDR3 1600MHz

GPU

eVGA GeForce GTX660Ti 2GB

HDD

2 Samsung 830 series 128gb SSD

PSU

Corsair AX750

CPU Cooler

Noctua NH-D14 (Im a little weary about water cooling)

Case

CoolerMaster HAF 932 Full Tower

OS

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Theres a few things about this build:

1)for the $1400 that newegg is asking for (not including the operating system) I would rather have the guys at CyberpowerPC build and ship it to me rather than having to put everything together.

2) im not quite comfortable with watercooling the cpu given all the pump failures and leakage issues that could arise. Can anyone advise on a watercooling option that is as good as the noctua air cooler?

3) the Noctua air cooler is huge based on what im reading and can barely fit in most cases with the Ram, can anyone comment on whether this config will work for my case?

Thanks in advance

Everything looks good except the RAM... I'd get faster ram for your motherboard... something like this:

1. No it will be much better if you do it yourself... especially since you get to learn what makes what work, and you'll learn what happens if you mess up hehe

2. Yeah, any of the Corsair H series... H80 is nice, H100 is really nice but large and you need top vented case with space for two 120mm fans (the size of the block for H100)

3. Yeah it will work for that case... the ram heat spreaders on the pair I recommended are small.

Something else to think about. 128GB SSD... I've got a 120 for FSX and it's filling up - I've got a lot of scenery and aircraft/airport addons. I would seriously consider a 256GB if your wallet will allow it. Speaking of cases... your pick is excellent... but I'm partial to my Corsair 650D. Plenty of room, superb cable management... cool features like trays for hdd's... brackets for mounting ssds etc.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139006&name=Computer-Cases

Thanks much Ryan! Lol im not a big fan of messing up especially when It comes to $1500 worth of hardware, but Ill take the plunge and build it myself. Im going to stick to air cooling and using the Corsair Vengeance 8gb low profile ram sticks. I could be dead wrong but I dont forsee going over 100gb's in FSX as i have only 2 handfuls of scenery and the PMDG 737 n future 777 to install.
