Can't find where 2nd NAV tone coming from

Featured Replies

Hi, I have the 737NGX and I'm getting tones fron the NAV radio from two different sources. The standard PMDG is on the radio stack below the mic selector switches- those light up and it's easy to tell what's going on there. But there is another -annoyingly loud- tone coming from an unknown source. I notice it is of a somewhat higher pitch than the pmdg one. I have FSX with FSINN, my WX is ASX, I do have other add-on aircraft installed but obviously not running. I messed with both FSX and FSINN settings and doesn't make a difference. It stops just like the PMDG one when you "detune" the radio. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to track this down? Thanks in advance

If it's higher pitched than the usual VOR/ILS tone, then it is coming from the DME. Check if the DME volume knob is selected on any of the NGX audio panels.

If, while you're in the NGX, you were to use the "select aircraft" menu option in FSX to load the default 172, I'm sure you would see the DME button is selected on its audio panel when it loads.

What might be happening is that you have a standard FSX aircraft like the 172 selected as your default flight, and that default was saved with DME enabled, so that when you load the NGX, the DME audio is already "on".

That is why it a good idea to use only the Trike as your default aircraft when loading FSX, or set the program to load the NGX directly on startup.

Well, I loaded the 172 and sure enough the DME light on the panel is stuck on. And it is beeping. So I guess i'll do a few restarts and saves with the 172 then load th 737. I usually keep the 737 loaded, I just save and over write at each destination before I shut down, then check the default box. That way it always starts where I left off. But I don't know how the switch in the 172 got changed, it has been a long time since I flew the 172.

There is also a default FSX key command that can turn the DME audio on. I'm not at my FSX computer, so cannot tell you what that combo is... but as I recall, it is very similar to a more commonly used key command, and can enable DME audio in ANY loaded aircraft. Might be something line plain "D" (for syncing the gyro) vs. "ALT-D"

That may not be it exactly, but it was something similar. I hit the wrong key combo by mistake once, started hearing the DME, and had no idea at the time

what I had done to cause it...

The default key combo to turn this off I think is shift + 3. I did this my self while using shift + E to open the door and mistakenly hit the 3. If this isn't it, it could be Ctrl + 3 too, but I am almost 99% sure its Shift + 3
