How much will adding a little RAM help with 2k4?

Featured Replies

I know this may technically belong in the hardware forum, but chances are very good that someone in this forum can answer who may never venture over to the hardware forum.Anyway, I have an older machine with 384 MB of RAM, and would like to know if FS can benefit much from adding another 256.I've also posted a RAM plus Video Card question in hardware. Thanks,Andrew

The short answer is Yes. I recommend at minimum of 512 RAM.The long answer is "it depends" on how much other software you have running and what your free physical ram is before you run FS. Basically, you want to be able to have enough physical RAM so that the OS doesn't have to swap out to the swap file. So, you may be able to get by if you shutdown enough software and defrag your memory before running FS (which is what FSAutoStart is for hint hint :-lol)

LOL... hint taken. And about to be downloaded. Thanks for the info, I'll be heading out to get another stick. It's all those programs in the tray and that come up with CTRL-ALT-DEL, right? Hm..Also - are you having fun with your lessons? I don't know if you've posted anywhere about them but I may have missed them. I guess you have to update your sig after each one...Cheers,Andrew

What OS are you running? In 2000/XP, when you hit CAD you can see not only user programs (the ones that run under your login) but all the services that run. Each one takes up memory, and, even if they are "sleeping", probably are consuming some CPU cycles. You might be surprised at how many threads are created in your system. On mine, even after I run FSAutoStart to shut down everything I can, I still have over 200 threads running. Each thread requires a context switch from the OS (assuming it is not sleeping waiting on a critical section or semaphore or some other object to be signalled.) So, the less context switches required, the more CPU can be devoted to our favourite game.Same goes for Win9x/ME, but there is no such thing as a service.Haven't been able to fly for a while now due to other commitments and the freakin weather - down here in the Deep South we get TStorms daily.
