Right ASUS motherboard for my build

Featured Replies

I am getting back into the hobby after some considerable absence. I am going to build my own machine, and am looking at the following motherboard upon which I will base the build:

ASUS P9X79 PRO LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with USB BIOS

The salient question: Is this board overkill, or will I get equal performance out of a Z77 board? I am basing the decision on the Ivy Bridge i7 3770K 3.5 processor, but admittedly I am at a loss as to whether I am spending too much on the MB for no appreciable gain in performance. I have already purchased the TQS from Throttletek, and a FMC + MCP for the 737. Am not going full cockpit build, but will have a multi monitor set up. Looking for smooth frame rates, have the rest of the system pretty much picked out, just want to be sure of the MB.

Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks and regards,

JT

Not so much the "overkill" cost of the mainboard, TK, as the cost of the processor to fit it. The 2011 - socket- compatible procs are the

Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition @ ~$1,100 (NCIX, Toronto)

Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition @ ~$1,100

Core i7-3930K @ $547 (NewEgg)

Core i7-3820 @ $299 (NewEgg), though this is only partially unlocked.

The 3770K and an adequately-compatible board can be had for just under $600...

Does this help, or have I misunderstood something here? (which is entirely possible!!) .....

I think you may have just saved me a lot of trouble... which is why I decided to post here :-). The MB and the Processor I had picked out look to be a mismatch !!!! Glad I asked before I ordered. I was pricing out on Newegg, and so took a look at another MB that looks to be more in line with the processor:

ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

I am glad you took the time to respond :-) That would have been a costly mistake!

That said, what do you think of this set up? I am guessing it will be fast enough, with a top shelf graphics card and speedy memory?

Many thanks

All good, JT! However - no it won't be fast enough - FSX can kill anything that's built at this time!

That being said - the i7 2700k and newer procs, can all be overclocked so very easily, and - providing you can do this, or have some "trusted person" do it for you - you will be in for having fun with the best sim you have ever seen.

All of those procs will get within a hair of 5.0 GHz, and will make the sim fly - no pun intended. Top shelf gpu - probably the 680 at this time. Wow. I am SO jealous!

All the Best,

My wife is not so happy, but at least for now, no major remodel of the attic for a 737 cockpit. Yet.

I am going with the 680 for sure, the 4GB version as I do want to go multi monitor, and maybe then to a projector set up. I got hooked at the Luchtvaart Hobby shop in November, while I was transiting through AMS. I had been out of touch with the hobby for over 10 years, and then WOWZAA, I saw their 737 and well, it started all over again! Incredible how advanced this is now!

In fact, that attic idea is sounding better all the time.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Much appreciated.

Cheers
