Welcome to AVSIM!

For most B747 automated operations (e.g., climb, cruise, descent), only one autopilot needs to be engaged. Each autopilot is capable of managing automated flight alone. Multiple autopilots are used mainly during automated approaches and landings, during which redundancy and safety are even more important. If the FMC and navigation radios are configured properly before approach, pressing the APP button should engage all three autopilots in preparation for the imminent autoland (if you do not disengage the autopilot prior to landing).

I suggest reading the type rating lessons offered on the PMDG web site in order to familiarize yourself with the normal operations of the aircraft.
