  1. Thank you to the AVSIM community and staff for providing and sustaining a wonderful place in which aviation enthusiasts such as me can discuss, learn, and share. This is a very special post, as it is my two thousandth, and coincides with the day I joined AVSIM exactly one year ago. And I received my one hundredth +1 today—oh, the timing!
  2. Love the complexity that is being modelled!
  3. Superb angles and curves!
  4. No worries. I pointed it out not because I was offended, but because I could imagine others misunderstanding and taking offense.
  5. I think users should have the option of using McPhat repaints. The repaints may be exaggerated, but so are payware airports with unrealistic, high-contrast colors—sometimes these exaggerated features look more aesthetically appealing than their "realistic" counterparts, due to FSX graphics/lighting limitations. The best example: FlightSoft Hong Kong versus FlyTampa Hong Kong.
  6. Superb contrast and sky colors!
  7. Hmm, is that word choice really necessary? Very insightful animation. Regarding ultra-highly developed automation in commercial aviation, a system similar to the one suggested by Kevin (advanced ground control of aircraft with single on-board monitoring/redundant "pilots") could soon be viable. Because of artificial intelligence limitations, human creativity will always be required. With reliable communications technologies, humans could still manage and, when necessary, provide creative input to flights from the ground, thus eliminating fatigue, saving costs, and utilizing human resources more effectively.
  8. Gorgeous mountains in the third image!
  9. No problem. At this time, you can probably still edit and remove the text.
  10. Welcome to AVSIM, but please skim through the thread before posting outside content. Another user just posted that passage here, and a re-post in a larger font only wastes valuable space.
  11. Regarding soft landings, the gear design of the B777 seems quite forgiving during touchdown compared to that of other wide-body aircraft; for example, the awkward forward-tilting bogies of the A380 and B767, the "stiff" bogies of the A330 and A340 that dampen initial touchdowns but make "landing" the forward gears difficult, and the sheer number of wheels that must touch down during A380 and B747 landings.
  12. Great dawn colors and landing light effects! I am so excited for this.
  13. I am currently away from FSX, but UT2 (and most likely other traffic add-ons) include graphs and time tables, from which one can determine the busiest day of week and time of day.
  14. Wow. I must say, as nerve-racking as landing next to a wrecked B777 may be for passengers, that image was composed brilliantly.
  15. Thanks for sharing, and wow—64 GB of memory!
  16. The latest FDR altitude/speed data as announced at 15:00 EST by the NTSB via live stream: VREF: 137 kt At 500 ft, speed 134 kt. At 200 ft, speed 118 kt. At 125 ft, speed 112 kt. 3 seconds before impact, speed 103 kt. At impact, speed 106 kt. I did not hear clearly, but I believe the spokesperson said that the throttles began advancing at approximately 125 ft and were at 50% three seconds before impact.
  17. I believe EVA Airways has not experienced any accidents whatsoever, though it has only existed for about 20 years. Regardless, its safety record is superb compared to that of China Airlines during the same post-1991 period. And its service is quite good.
  18. The Lancair Legacy does seem inexpensive compared to other GA aircraft and fun. Rodrigo David uploaded an excellent video featuring some Piper aircraft, but has since removed all videos from his channel.
  19. Nice lighting! The angle captures the elegant curves of the B777 well. Actually, Robert did not use "stupid". On the internet, one's intentions can easily be misinterpreted. Unfortunately, in your case, a few people including myself interpreted your remarks as condescending and possibly troll-y.
  20. While I support collaborative speculation, one should at least be somewhat knowledgeable about the topic in order to maintain a good discussion. For example, the following CNN comment is not very valuable to the discussion: "If I had to speculate, it sounds like the instrument readings were off. Too many people these days think that turning off the cell phones is not necessary and usually try to start them in advance because they start working right around the time the plane makes the final approach. It is infuriating, but people don't say anything because they are usually young children traveling with their parents who seem to not care."
  21. Pilot error should not be immediately attributed to poor training. Pilots are human and make errors. Some airlines will propose autoland/autopilot-only policies (to immediate union protests) as methods of reducing human error–related accidents, and there is an undeniable trend towards fully automated commercial aviation, because pilots will make errors regardless of how much high-quality training they receive. Also, please try to keep cultural perspective in mind. Asiana is an excellent airline, and its training procedures are probably at least acceptable. Even if they are not, it is unlikely that Asiana purposely "doesn't comply" and takes dangerous short cuts: being immersed in a certain culture can prevent one from seeing the wrong in his or her actions that people of other cultures may see. To me, labeling another culture's elements as "silly cultural quirks" is ignorant and rude. We need more information about Asiana's safety and training records before we can definitively villainize it.
  22. The NTSB is posting details through Twitter. Its page includes a photograph of the recovered black boxes.
  23. If mechanical failures have been ruled out, this could suggest that the pilot became disoriented or overcompensated after the aircraft remained too high on approach.
  24. Wow. The initial impact did not seem too severe, compared to what followed. I am guessing that the spin was responsible for most of the injuries and damage to the aircraft.
  25. Rations replied to eNuffSaid's topic in In Memoriam
Seems like a cool and cordial person. May he rest in peace.
