Opus and Maddog md80

Featured Replies

Does anyone has problems using both? Every time there's a weather update, I get a over speed warning, the auto throttle disconnects and the aircraft loses the navigation... This type of behaviour never, ever, happened to me using Active Sky.

Also I'm getting strange temperatures while cruising... Made two flights in the afternoon. The 1rst one at FL310, the temperature shown in the cockpit was +1ºC. The other one was at FL270 and the temperature was +12ºC. :\ Also with Active Sky it never happened!

Can anyone confirm these issues?

Cheers...

The above quoted temperatures were in actual fact the TAT which was erroneously being compared with the targeted ambient temperature, which of course is a SAT. When the SAT was comapared there was actually 100% agreement at all levels. Please see our reply to this post on our Flight1 support forum.

Try the latest version we have tried to tighten the temp targets for FSX.

It doesn't happen with AS since they use fixed global weather which doesn't upset FSX since it doesn't change, the problem with this is you don't see realistic weather fronts all around you and on the horizon, just weather around your aircraft.

Hello! This got me interested. Can you please expend on this? Just to compare, the first post has 6 pictures.

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/396396-as2012-took-my-breath-away/

On the picture #4, you can see that there is clear weather in front of the aircraft, but clouds to the left and overcast behind the aircraft. This was using the Global/direct weather mode.

How does this differ from the way Opus injects varying weather around the aircraft? Thanks for the help!

We inject detailed weather over an area of 900km x 900km so you can see distant weather fronts, fly to them, see the weather you have left behind, see real detailed weather all around you.

Our weather reports provide long Range (300 mile) ATIS for your Local, Destination and 4 Alternate airfields. Also Lower and Upper Atmosphere reports detailing winds and temperatures aloft.

AS inject METARs using the standard FSX methods which morph the weather beyond 80 miles so ATIS (and the weather) is not accurate.

Try the free demo, the weather is limited in demo mode to 100 miles and only updated on the ground but you will see the effect I have explained.

Regards

Cheryl

Thank you for your answer! I think I didn't quite ask the question correctly (English is only one of the four languages I try to speak).

If you don't mind, I would like to try again.

... It doesn't happen with AS since they use fixed global weather which .. doesn't change, the problem with this is you don't see realistic weather ...

I tried to challenge this statement. From my flights and the screenshots I've provided, you should see that this is not quite true.

We inject detailed weather over an area of 900km x 900km so you can see distant weather fronts, fly to them, see the weather you have left behind, see real detailed weather all around you.

Very good. Both programs do almost the same think. The difference (at least for me) is that Opus injects weather beyond the 80 miles mark. With both programs you can see the weather approaching, weather to the sides and the weather you left behind.

AS inject METARs using the standard FSX methods which morph the weather beyond 80 miles so ATIS (and the weather) is not accurate.

Absolutely correct. This is why both of the products provide "ATIS enhancement". Opus has the dedicated window and AS has a set of frequencies you can set you radio to listen for correct ATIS. I prefer the Opus way as you can use the window _and_ correct ATIS frequencies.

Our weather is not morphed to anything like the same extent. Most likely the worst that will happen is that FSX will decide to place a cloud layer 100 or so feet different than specified when nearly 300 miles away ! When you inject METARs (as Opus does NOT do) then the weather can be seriously morphed right in front of your eyes (Stephen).

What I'm trying to say that I have yet to understand what is behind these words: "you don't see realistic weather". I know that the analogy police will arrest me but _to me_ this sounds equivalent of Wilco saying that PMDG's 737 doesn't have an autopilot.

It is very likely that I have misunderstood something. This is why I'm eager to learn more.

I disagree. I was basing my statements on first hand knowledge of using other products and on what happens inside FSX when you inject METARs, a method of weather injection we tried and rejected. The reason, the weather is seriously morphed as soon as you inject the METAR. Also all weather injected using this method is both fleeting and transient.

One main difference is highlighted by this ...

If you goto EGNX (East Midlands) airport and update the OpusFSX weather,

If you then takeoff from EGNX (East Midlands) and fly south-east towards the English Channel and encounter a warm front accompanied by showers over Kent; Then you WILL encounter the very SAME warm front and showers if you takeoff from LFAT (Le Touquet) and fly north-west toward East Midlands !

Similarly, if you takeoff from EGNX (East Midlands) and fly north towards EGNT Newcastle and encounter stormy weather as you pass through Yorkshire; Then you WILL encounter the exact SAME storms if you takeoff from EGNT Newcastle and head south towards EGNX East Midlands !

The weather is not morphed to any significant extent and is certainly not transient nor does it evaporate in front of your eyes when you try to fly through it.

May I also remind everyone this is the OpusFSX unofficial 'support' forum, please refrain from trying to advertise competing products, just be grateful you have a variety of excellent, but different, products to choose from.

First things first. Sorry for "hijacking" this thread. I considered that it might be "acceptable" as the OP has received an answer on the official support forum. (Not a bug in OpusFSX but a misunderstanding).

Thank you Stephen! Now I have something I can use to evaluate the demo version. It easier when you know what to look for. Much appreciated!

This was not my intention. I'm sorry if it can be seen as such :( I was just reporting my own findings.

The good think is that the weekend is here and I have time to take the OpusFSX demo for a spin :)

I thought you were already familiar with the OpusFSX LWE. You could try the latest Beta version, the betas will run in demo mode.

Just specify your destination and alternates, update the weather and fly. The demo only generates weather when you are on the ground and loads a reduced amount of weather data into the sim, but is OK for local flights of about 50 miles or so.
