I am installing a Gigabyte GTX 670 OC Edition card in my new build and I noticed that power adaptor cables that came with the card do not seem to match the color coding of the cables from my Seasonic power supply. The Seasonic power cables have 4 pins:

Pin 1. yellow = 12V DC

Pin 2. black = Gnd or common

Pin 3. black = 2nd Gnd or common (presumably associated with the 5V DC)

Pin 4. red = 5V DC

 

The two graphic card adaptor cables only use 3 pins on each. The yellow and black wires/pins match with Pn 1 Pin 2 OK ,but the red wire is connected to Pin 3 which is the second black wire from the power supply. The fourth pin is lefty empty.

 

Does anyone know if this wire color missmatch is normal?

 

I cannot think of any logical reason why this third red wire would need to be grounded.

I have the gigabyte GTX 670. I think you are looking at the molex adaptor. I believe mine only came with a molex -> 8 pin connector. In other words, the cable that came with the 670 is not meant to be plugged directly into the PSU but into another cable that is coming from the PSU.

 

Can you could post a picture of what it looks like so I can be 100% sure?

You are correct in that there are potentially 8 pins associated with each of the adaptor cables. I forgot that each of the two adaptor cables splits into two 4 pin plugs which are then connected to cables coming from the powers supply. The graphics card only uses 3 of the 4 pins in each plug and every one of these 4 plugs has this same issue of the red wire being connected to the black wire on power supply plug.

Attached is a photo of the four connections, the white female connectors are from the graphics card. The photo is not ideal but hopefully you can see that the red wire from the graphics card is connected to pin 3 in each case and that the red wire from the PSU is on pin 4 on each of the black connectors.

 

So the connections are:

From PSU --------> GTX 670 OC card

 

Pin1 +12V DC Yellow wire -----> Yellow wire

Pin2 Common Black wire -----> Black wire

Pin3 Common Black wire -----> Red wire

Pin4 +5V DC Red wire -----> N/C

 

Gigabyte support should be back at work on the 17th after the Chinese New Year break, so I will refer this issue to them. I was hoping that someone on the forum might be able tell me quickly if this adaptor cable wiring was normal for this card (GV-N670OC-2GD) or not.

I'm pretty sure that's how it's supposed to be. Does the graphics card work when you boot up?

Unless someone has already taken the plunge with the graphics card power wiring like this, I am reluctant to take the risk myself - I will sit on my hands until I get a reply from Gigabyte support or someone can convince me that it is meant to be that way.

 

The Seasonic PSU pinouts conforms to the usual ATX 4 pin Molex peripheral power connector standard so I don't believe there is any issue on that side.

I have GTX 670, 2 plugs with only yellow and black, no reds. yellow all above, black below. These are direct from power supply.

 

So if you have 'red' wires from the video card that are connecting to black from power, then that should be ok. As long as they are below the yellow. from your picture, the Red wires from power are going nowhere, which is correct.

 

So what you need is yellow from power supply to top row, black from power supply to bottom row. The way it looks in your picture should be Ok. even though they are red, they connect to black.

Problem solved. Your are correct in that I should have been looking for modular cables that connect directly to the card. Another person on another forum also advised to forget the adaptor cables from Gigabyte and look for two direct connections from my Seasonic PSU, which I have subsequently found and it is now powered up and working.
