February 13, 201313 yr I am in the planning process to build a new system. I am currently using e8500 with 4gb ddr2 400 ram so I know anything will be a huge improvement but here is what I am thinking. Asrock z77 extreme6 motherboard 3570k. Plan to OC to 4.4-4.6 8gb DDR3 1866 cas 9 Crucial m4 64gb ssd for OS (windows 7 64bit) Crucial m4 128 gb ssd for fsx and add ons only WD 1tb black hdd for other stuff Thermaltake smart series 750m PS Rosewill Thor v2 case Enermax ets t40 CPU cooler GTX 660ti or GTX 670... Haven't decided for sure. So what do you think? Plan to have several add ons such as GEX,UTX,GSX,AS2012, PMDG aircraft and others. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Scott
February 13, 201313 yr I read somewhere that you should stay away from the ti GPUs in FSX. I'd go with the 670, or better yet, the 680. Edit: Also, are you building this on your own NewEgg style? If so, you should seriously consider going through Cyberpower. You can most likely get into the Zeus Thunder 1000 for about the same price as buying all the components yourself. And, of course, you can let them do all the work, like overclocking your CPU for you--hassle free. I just ordered mine (the Zeus Thunder 2500), and I'm stoked.
February 15, 201313 yr Author Ok thank you. Would the 670 even be overkill? Should I just go with the 660? I assume putting fsx stuff all on a single ssd is not a bad idea? I've read a lot on here and just want to make sure I'm on the right track. Yes I'm planning to build myself. Been putting parts list together through newegg. Really not sure size of power supply I need. I don't plan to SLI at any time so with parts listed and modest overclock what do you think?
February 15, 201313 yr Author Ok. Another question. I was looking at asrock extreme6 but newegg has extreme4 on sale for good price. So since I am not planning SLI would it be fine? Other than PCI E slot differences and VRM heatsink differences is it worth the added expense for the 6?
February 15, 201313 yr Can't help you on the ASRock - I always use ASUS but I can say that the 660 OC or Ti is great with FSX. The 680 is even better but the price difference is hard to justify. Most GPU reviewers will tell you that the 660 versions are the best $$ value. Ron W
February 15, 201313 yr I cant comment on the Asrock board, like most I have an Asus and would suggest you'll get more help and advice with overclocking here if you went the Asus (P8z77) route. I don't see the point of 3 HDD's you're just adding more points of failure, I haven't read any posts proving an additional drive is neccesary for your FSX instalation since way before SSD's were available and even then the evidence was tenuous. I would suggest looking at the Samsung 830 (not 840) SSD drives, they have a very good rep for reliability and performance. Google "power supply calculator" for an understanding of what your system is likely to need, always bare in mind that a decent make is more important than numbers as long as you have the reccomended wattage for your build. Regrading your chosen cooler - probably not the best choice if you want to overclock - http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cooling/2012/12/06/enermax-ets-t40-ta-review/2 I'm not an advocate of closed loop water coolers there are plenty of air coolers that perform as well and have less to go wrong. With your graphics card you need to state what resolution you will be running at, my 560Ti has resources left to spare when running at 1680x1050.
