August 27, 200421 yr Has anyone downloaded Vincent's new European mesh? His uploads seem to be a pretty comprehensive coverage of Europe. Any comments on the result?
August 27, 200421 yr It looks interesting--I'd love to give Switzerland a try. Even of more interest is the link he provided to the DEM data. Makes me want to quit landclassing for a while to try my hand at improving the mesh in my areas of interest..-John
August 27, 200421 yr I have this brand new WI-FI DSL connection in my home, and feel the urge to download all them during dinner tonight... :)
August 27, 200421 yr Hi Tom.I'll look at some of the mesh and see if I spot any problems.A few comments. This is SRTM-derived mesh. That mesh is raw, and subject to many problems ( spikes, pits, voids, and errors in placement and not adjusted to the inevitable errors in elevation )... but is still the best free elevation data for most of the world.I do not use the FSDem program, but it's function is to democratize the creation of SRTM-derived mesh for FS9. As a result, the users of FSDem are unlikely to be able to fix any problems that will arise from their creations... much the same as the problems we saw that developed with the use of the SRTM2BGL program. If the mesh doesn't crash the sim, avoids glaring spikes and pits, and different sets adjoin properly, then it's use is back to the old standard: If it looks nice, why not use it?Note that the lakes, oceans, roads, rivers, runways will still be mislocated and misshaped... mesh won't correct that, and may even exaggerate it.==========================A possible problem down the road:The use of LOD9 will make the mesh look nice and bumpy. But in the future, some skilled craftsman may make a better mesh, from better data or using better techniques to eliminate errors or voids... and he will want to use LOD9.This is a design decision that would avoid future conficts for endusers. Just because we can make LOD9 mesh from raw SRTM doesn't mean we should. The average user of this mesh will not know how to deactivate this mesh if a better set comes along at LOD9... in fact he will not even know he should deactivate it.LOD8 would be a much better detail level for use with FSDem, and would be about as bumpy as we need for this data set... and it would reserve LOD9 for the designers that actually know what they are doing. And LOD8 may be a bit better for framerates.Dick
August 27, 200421 yr Hi Tom.I downloaded Germany and Denmark. There is a gap in data coverage that I actually expected to find:http://webpages.charter.net/ludowr/VanVeen.jpgThis is a typical mistake of inexperienced mesh creators. In addition, there has been no attempt to clean up the ocean data, so I would expect there has also been no attempt to search and kill the spikes and pits inherent in the data set. Missing data in the mountains would be at the mercy of the FSDem process, and may or may not be acceptable... the creator would probably not even be aware of the interpolation of the data in the mountainous areas. This is pretty much what I expected to see, and supports my reasoning to reserve LOD9 for experienced mesh-makers. I'll delete this mesh set.Dick
August 27, 200421 yr Hi Tom,I'm afraid there may be some, at least. Here is an image of his bgl file for France.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/89293.jpgAnd one of my own mesh for that part of Europe.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/89294.jpgI only downloaded the one file, so I don't how the rest looks, but if he thinks this mesh covers all of France, then there is a problem. It is possible that the rest is included in his other offerings, but he has tried to divide it up into countries and a lot is missing here.Another possibility may be the problem Resample sometimes has with data lying across the 0 degree Meridian. This seems the more likely explanation, since his Eastern edge of "France" ends there. This may, therefore be a problem with all his mesh falling across this meridian, but I'll leave it to others to download the rest. :)Steve
August 27, 200421 yr I wanted to ask (in regards to this thread): I've long looked for a good freeware Swiss mesh--especially one that depicts the Matterhorn well. The closest I ever came was Raimundo's, but it left behind what I would call "ridge" artifacts in the scenery, giving certain areas a stairstepped approach.Does anyone have any ideas for a good freeware mesh for Switzerland?-John
August 27, 200421 yr Dear John;you can get the version 2 of the alps srtm terrain - wich basically it covers most of the alps and switzerland also.this fix lots of issue compare to the first version - released.i'm on srtm version 3 - and as soon i get some spare time - i'll re-do the alps package using the v3 srtm - wich is a very clean srtm terrain - - .Regarding the Matterhorn :i will search for some 30 m dem - could be aster - and see what results - i can get - if i get the peak - i'll do a custom job - to add in version 3.V.2 alps - Here:http://www.fsfreeware.com/cgi-bin/dcd_a/dc...rtm_v2_alps.zipray
