Tom Allensworth's post in Avsim Subscription was marked as the answerFirst, let me put any speculation regarding Elaine's location to rest. She is connecting from Ireland, and judging from her PayPal account, she's the real deal. Now, let's move on from that.
Elaine,
I appreciate the suggestion and the sentiment behind it. However, as Bill has pointed out, from day 1 of AVSIM's existence I have said that we will not charge, period, by any definition for access. We have said that about tiered membership, etc. As Bill has pointed out, if the membership allows us to fade away, then we will fade away. As for donations, we are 14 days away from the end of the year. Here are the donations to date:
The Support Goal is what it actually costs, approximately, a year, to keep AVSIM running and healthy. By healthy, I mean bandwidth, putting away money for new hardware to replace our now 5 year old servers, consultants, software upgrades, maintenance contracts, etc. The Engineering Services Goal was an attempt to pay off the actual amount that we spent earlier this year when we had a RAID system failure.
As is obvious, none of the goals has been met despite the very generous donations of many many good folk this year, including you. Advertising revenue has been far less than the Support Donations and in the scheme of things has hardly counted toward achieving our overall goal of $36,000 for this year.
I am not bewailing the amount donated, nor am I holding my hand out begging. I won't do either. My philosophy for the last 18 years has been very simple; when the time comes that we can't keep the doors open, it will be because we have a community that has moved on and found their needs fulfilled elsewhere. That's okay.
Now, before everyone runs off with their hair on fire and screaming around the net that AVSIM is about to disappear, that could not be farther from the truth. Over the years, we have squirreled away "rainy day" money that we have been able to add to our savings to keep the doors open. That holds true unless a major system failure occurs; i.e., one of our servers dies. If that happens, all bets are off. However, as of today, we are able to assure everyone that we'll be around for a long time to come. And, just to repeat myself and shut down the anti-AVSIM goonies out there, no one on AVSIM staff, draws a salary, including me.
Bottom line; if the donations dry up, and we run out of reserves, then the message will be loud and clear. AVSIM is no longer a viable entity and we will go the way of the dodo.

Tom Allensworth's post in Issue Saving a Post was marked as the answerYes, I have confirmed that this is an issue. If you compose a message and then edit it, and you are taken to the TEXT editor (as opposed to the BBCode or full editor) and then save the message from there, you will most likely see the edited message with HTML code in it. The way to keep this from happening is when you go to edit your message, click on the TEXT / BBCODE switch at the top of the editor and then make your changes to your message. Then save and you should not see those codes. This has been reported to IPB for examination.

Tom Allensworth's post in [RESOLVED] View New Content Aging Fast was marked as the answerWhen you view content using the VIEW NEW CONTENT link at the top right hand of the page, you are showing all messages posted since your last read of the forums. No matter what you have read, the VNC shows you what has been posted since your LAST visit. Okay, so, click on the VNC and pick a message; any message. Now, once you have finished reading the message, DO NOT USE THE BACK key/button/arrow etc. While in the message, click on the VNC link again. As long as you have not taken hours to do so, reading a message and then clicking on the VNC should take you back to the start of the messages you have not read, but that are new since your last cookie was placed. And yes, no one seems to be having this issue besides you, as far as I can tell.

Tom Allensworth's post in [RESOLVED] Delete key behavior was marked as the answerYou are correct. And this does result from the upgrades to v.3.4.3 of this system. If you attempt to delete white space, it will take out more than you had wanted. Bring back your content by hitting the REVERT button in the editor. To delete white space between paragraphs without causing that to happen, but your cursor on the spot just before the first word in the second paragraph and then use the delete key. The issue seems to only appear in white space and not between text or sentences.

Tom Allensworth's post in [RESOLVED] Why does everyone have @mention in their sidebar? was marked as the answer@@fppilot It opens your email? It should (and does) only open up a message box to address the person that you have @Mentioned at. The person then will get a notice that you have mentioned them, as you should this one. You can't @mention yourself. That may be why you are seeing email respond.

Tom Allensworth's post in [RESOLVED] Avsim slow? was marked as the answerI just want to conclude this discussion, for me anyway, by saying that at the end of the day this site is flying fast and furious for the hardware we can afford and provide as a FREE website with large bandwidth bills. Please keep that in mind when you percieve the site is running slow. I suggest that before anyone states that the site is "slow", that they quantify it with a PING and TRACERT and post the results in a SUPPORT ticket request. Without that, the use of the word "slow" is meaningless.
