September 4, 200421 yr From looking at some of the screenshots as well as pictures from the latest PC Pilot magazine review, it appears that some of the old default MicroSoft Roads show in addition to the new correctly placed roads? In a few of the shots, this looks really odd. I thought USA Roads would have completely erased and replaced the old roads. For all who own the product, is this so, and if so, how much (if any) of a distraction is this?
September 4, 200421 yr USA Roads is one of the best addons I've ever used; the immersion it creates, even when traveling in unfamiliar areas, is remarkable. It's nice to be able to look at a map of familar places and fly the big roads! I flew from Northeast Philadelphia to Atlantic City, then south to Cape May by roads alone. It's also interesting to see unusual intersections, then check the map, and they're on there! What happens is that certain objects in 2004 (such as bridges) remain in place, but USA Roads draws them (albeit as flat roads) where they should be. I believe it's because 2004 uses Autogen of some sort for many bridges. (Anyone?)In the case of bridges, you see the bridge, and a road on the water, underneath it.For me, it's not in the least bit distracting, aside from the desire to move the bridge to the correct location ;)Also, when USA Roads display on scenery tiles with generic, bitmap-only roads on them (such as a suburban tile) it looks crappy, but I'm working on erasing roads from all the original textures so there will be no visual conflict. To sum it up, though, if you want to see accurate roads, and it's in your budget, buy it. And like I said, even if you're in unfamiliar territory, it's quite nice to arrive at a city as the roads build up, and lead into the city, and overfly "real" roads as you approach the airport. Even if you fly primarily IFR (I fly lots) it's still a great way to liven up an otherwise bland environment.Cheers,Andrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g
September 4, 200421 yr I just disabled the default autogen bridges. A lot of them were just so awful they weren't worth keeping. The original poster may also be refering to the "roads" which are part of the city textures used in the landclass tiles. Someone said a month or so ago that they were working on replacement city textures with the "roads" removed, but I haven't heard anything about it recently. More details in this thread:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...03124&mode=fullDan
September 5, 200421 yr >Someone said a month or so ago that they were working on>replacement city textures with the "roads" removed....Hmmm, now where on earth could that person be???!!! Well know where to be found I guess! :-lolJust kidding. To help with above mentioned problem Just use the "major roads only" option with the USAroads setup and you will have a better (visualy) looking alternative as far as the city/town areas go.
September 5, 200421 yr >>Someone said a month or so ago that they were working on>>replacement city textures with the "roads" removed....>>>Hmmm, now where on earth could that person be???!!! Well know>where to be found I guess! :-lol>>Just kidding.Yeah, yeah. :) I just realized now that Andrew was the person who mentioned he might try editing the default tiles... oops.I blame this on my newly upgraded computer. Text just whizzes by so fast that I can barely read it. :( Anyone remember back in the day when we moved from 286 to 386 based computers, and when you typed DIR at a DOS prompt, the text scrolled faster than you could read? We thought we where the hot shiznit back then! 50 polygons was considered a detailed FS plane!Dan
September 5, 200421 yr LOL...And there are a LOT of them. I'm actually pretty surprised at how many textures MS has created. Good stuff.- - - - - - - - - DIR/P baby!Andrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g

(with the right HS&F). Going, going...
September 5, 200421 yr If anyone has the SEP/OCT Issue of PC Pilot, refer to picture in lower right-hand corner of page 23. Look at the main highway coming down from the hills (middle of picture). It appears that there is the old MS straighter portrayed roadway (just a little blurred) just to the right of the more curvy USA Roads. This effect may be part of the "roads" which are part of the city textures used in the landclass tiles mentioned earlier in this thread, although I am not sure? This effect also seems to be shown in the picture in the lower left-hand corner (page 22) of the same issue. By the way, PC Pilot is a great magazine. Much kudos to them for the quality of the pictures and publication in general.Or maybe I am just being too picky? I have been known to do that.
