Compressing FSX directory?

Featured Replies

I'm not really sure if this is the right forum to post this, but this summer, we are going to travel, and i can really lug like a 10 pound laptop around to play FSX (yup, I use a laptop to play on it.). And since I can't do that, I was thinking of compressing the main FSX directory (which is about 24 GB in size) with WinZip to put into my 16 GB JumpDrive. Now my question is, if I compress FSX into a .zipx file, and then uncompress the folder on another computer where I will be staying at, will it impact the files whatsoever? My guess is no, but I just want to make sure. And if I can, which method of compression is the best apart from 'Best Method'?

Any comments are appreciated.

What are you going to do about registry entries - as just extracting FSX to a new machine won't do that.

There is a registry "repair" file on these forums which may or may not work in the situation you describe.

Depending what you have added to FSX those addons may also have their own folder structure which you may need to duplicate implicitly.

You will also need a new fsx.cfg file to reflect the changed video card, etc on your new PC.

You are correct in thinking that zipping the files shouldn't corrupt them etc.

However you could always buy a 32 GB USB thumb drive and just copy the files over without compressing them.

Me, I'd bite the bullet and take the laptop! What's 10 lbs amongst friends? (A: 4.5+ Kg)

Well update. It DOES fit. Time to convince my parents to let me bring it.
