IFR Practice Flights

Featured Replies

Any free resources out there which provide this. What I am looking for are:1. flights set up in MFS, 2. approach charts, 3. a detailed description of what to do and what to look out for.Came across this resource:http://www.bruceair.com/IFR%20Practice.htmwhich provides 1. I found the charts on-line OK, but there is no decent description. Can anyone suggest anything better.ThanksRichard

>I have provided a series of updated Practice Flights for>download on my Web site at:>>http://www.bruceair.com/more_practice_flights.html>>Bruce,You have done some amazing work here. I have a couple of Q.1. You have explained in detail.."what"/goals that needs to be done. Is there a "How to" anywhere here? In the text book maybe?2. Do you have any plans to translate them to FSX missions any time. That would be an amazing add on. Basically...you Bruce sitting next to the IFR student prompting (otional to turn off the prompts for evaluation mode) the fellow what to do at each step. The default FSX missions have some lessons for IFR. Thats a good model. But it could be expanded to a little more prompts.. I think.:)Manny

I may do something with FSX Missions later on. One of my goals with the Practice Flights, however, is to keep them simple by providing a set of interesting starting conditions and not clogging things up with a lot of noise. As for the instructions, as I indicate on the Web site and in the document that describes the Practice Flights, the background information necessary to understand and fly the specific procedures is available, among other places, in the FAA training handbooks and other publications that I cite and link to. My book has more detailed information about Flight Simulator and the aircraft used in the Practice Flights that I've provided. But I don't intend to write another treatise on IFR flying. My Aviation Resources page (http://www.bruceair.com/aviationresources.htm) has many links to excellent books, online courses, and other resources (most of them freely available on the Web) for people who want to learn as real pilots do.Note that this first set of additional Practice Flights includes several challenging procedures. The approaches at KYKM keep you busy and require more planning and attention to detail than many "ordinary" procedures. That's why they're excellent exercises for folks who have learned the fundamentals of IFR flying. The Practice Flights included with my book (which are also available for download from my Web site) offer many situations to help you build basic VFR and IFR flying skills.
