AFCAD Experts, Help Please

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,Recently, Lincoln NE (KLNK) changed their runway numbering for 17R/35L and 17L/35R. 17R is now 18 and 35L is now 36. 17L/35R was changed to 17/35. The ILS designation previously labeled for 17R/35L was changed to match the new numbering. To make the sim match my real life approach plates, I decided to use AFCAD to renumber the runways AND the associated ILS approaches. Runway renumbering worked fine, sim ATC recognized the new numbering just fine. HOWEVER, it did NOT recognize the fact of the renumbered ILS approaches--in fact, since there was no 17R/35L runway, there was NO numbered/labeled ILS approaches in the ATC menu at all. The ATC menu just had a listing for two "ILS" approaches (no numbering ID). When landing at KLNK, I was given a "Visual to runway 18"--changing to an ILS approach from the menu got me an undesignated ILS approach, but "circle to land on 18" instructions. I really had no idea which ILS was which (ATC apparently did not either, I think I had confused them ) nor did I know which ILS they were assigning me. I did check after I had made the changes to the runway numbering, the ILS (with the old lable) did show an association with the proper new runway numbers--so I then only changed the ILS lable in the box where it permitted that. So I guess my question is if I need to delete the existing ILS approaches in the AFCAD bgl file (these are the default approaches carried over to the bgl file) and then reinstall them as new ones with the new labels. Seems kind of silly, since AFCAD WILL let you relabel to match new runway numbering. AND the renumbering sets up the proper match with each ILS associated with that runway. I read about deleting an ILS you add if you renumber runways and then add another ILS, but does that mean that the same holds true for default ones as well??Another question. Will deleting an ILS in the AFCAD file cause any harm to the default file ILS?As always, thanks for your help.Paul

Must be someone here who can answer. I hope.Paul

Afcad can change your runway numbering and ILS signals....however, what ATC knows is controlled by a different bgl file which you will have to edit in xml separately. Look for the bglcomp file from the sdk site for the tool to edit the approach assignments.

Hi Kevin,Thanks for the answer. But I must ask--if ATC is using both runway numbering AND associated ILS title (NOT changing the ID of I-XYZ, the location of localizer and GS transmitters, etc) from that separate bgl file, why then can I change the runway numbers using AFCAD, and ATC can identify and use those instead of the old ones in landing instructions, but ATC can not use the changed ILS title (as on the approach plate)? I am not comfortable going in and editing a bgl file unless I am really sure what it will accomplish. I will get the bglcomp file though and check it out--thanks for the heads up on that. Regards,Paul

It is because the approaches have the old runway numbering in their software coding. Each and every approach affected by the change in numbering will have to be changed. I know this because I did Orlando International (KMCO) when they opened a new runway and renumbered the exiting runway from 17/35 to 17R/35L.What has to be done is decompile the default scenery file for KLNK - drive:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9SceneryNAMCsceneryAP922170.BGL into XML source, search the source for KLNK, cut and paste only KLNK to a new file, make all the necessary changes, and compile it into a new scenery file.Neither AFCAD221 or SceneGenX is capable of the approaches part of the airport files. They must be done manually until newer programs are available.W. Sieffert

Many thanks for clearing that point up. Had me going for a bit. Personally, I wish there was a single, simple facility editor for navaids, runways, enroute facilities, etc. Would be nice if MS would make all that stuff available in a text type of file for ease of editing. Sort of a one stop shoppiing experience. :-) Cheers,Paul
