Tutorial 1

Featured Replies

I have just bought the and installed the737NGX, and from what I have seen so far it is pretty amazing. I am however having a problem with tutorial 1 and I hope someone can help.

I set up the in the CDU, and everything seems fine. When I come to set up the MCP, VNAV will not arm. If I continue with flight, activate the autopilot, the aircraft climbs to the initial altitude of 5000ft, but as VNAV is not active will not go any higher.

Has anyone any ideas what I am doing wrong, I assume I must be setting the CDU up incorrectly, but I am sure I have followed the tutorial correctly. In fact I have tried 3 times, being really careful to follow the instructions to the letter.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Typed out a big long response and then lost it.  Here's the short version.

There are a number of ways (modes) to fly the plane and there are a number of reasons VNAV will not arm.  Most obvious would be the A/T is not armed (switch on the MCP).  Also check that BOTH flight directors are on (switches on the Capt and F/O side of the MCP) to ensure you have full automatic flight capabilities.

If you are still having problems there's no need to stay at 5000ft.  You can set your desired altitude and speed on the MCP and select LVL CHG and the aircraft will climb.  Or you can set SPD, ALT and V/S and select V/S mode to climb.

If A/T is not armed this will result in your losing speed and having to set thrust manually so that'll be the give-away.

Most obvious would be the A/T is not armed

Sorry, but arming the autothrottle is not a prerequisite for arming or engaging VNAV. From FCOMv2, page 11.41.2:

VNAV Armed for Takeoff

[FMC U10.7 and later]

VNAV may be armed on the MCP prior to takeoff provided the following

requirements have been met:

• a valid flight plan has been entered

• performance data has been entered and executed

• both flight director switches have been switched on

Target Speeds will follow the profile listed in the Climb Phase.

My (semi-wild) guess would be that the OP forgot to EXEC the performance data, or didn't enable both flight directors.

Lek767, you are correct, not sure what I was thinking.

Thanks for your help, think I may have not exec'd the performance data.
