objects slow to draw issue

Featured Replies

Hello

I'm very new to FSX so I would like to apologize for lack of knowledge ahead of time.  I've been reading and absorbing for a month and finally built FSX computer.

Issue that I came across is that when flying i keep seeing objects pop into the scene ahead of me.  My fps is steady at 30.  I'm using DX10 with shader fix and settings from DylanM's post here http://forum.avsim.net/topic/398670-interesting-observation-about-dx10-and-unlimited-frames/

I also have REX Essentials + Overdrive installed.

Not sure if this is normal or not but wanted to check in with the pros on this issue.  My specs are:

ASRock Extreme 4 Z77 board

Intel i7 3770k proc (No OC yet)

16GB RAM 1833

Samsung 840 250GB SSD

Zotac GTX 680 video card 4GB Ram

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit

I followed NicN's Windows 7 Guide to tune my windows 7 install.

Thanks

Alex

Welcome to DX10, Alex!!

Whereas seeing objects popping up is somewhat normal ( at least it's not that unusual, as graphic loads vary by the second) for DX10 OR DX9 - until we see your Inspector and fsx.cfg settings we are in the dark. Use the "More Reply Options" (bottom-right) and attach your fsx.cfg, renamed as Alex_fsx.txt - so that it will attach. The pm system will not allow a "cfg" file to be added, then post a screenshot of your Inspector settings. It is also most likely that this will disappear as you increase your clockspeed.

All the best,

With a PC like yours, you can increase the LOD radius so that objects will be drawn further ahead.

You will need to edit your fsx.cfg file, thus

[TERRAIN]

LOD_RADIUS=X.X00000 .

X being the figures you choose.

The default maximum LOD radius is 4.5 and will result in objects loading within your view unless visibility is very low.

However, if you set the radius to 9.5 and limit your visibility to 20 or 30 miles, you will not see it happening and the objects will be there by the time they emerge from the haze.

Much more than 9.5 may result in a degrading of performance.

Be aware, however, that if you do something that causes FSX to reload the scenery, it will reset the LOD_RADIUS setting to 4.5 and you will not be able to increase it until you have closed FSX and edited the fsx.cfg file again.

Regards,

Nick

Thank you Paul and ncooper.  My fsx.log is attached.  Also attached is screen shot of my NI

Hopefully i attached them correctly.  I'm still learning all the ins and outs of fsx.cfg so I might have something set incorrectly.  Also I might point out that this is my first venture into windows in last 5 years.  My main computer was and still is Mac Pro.  so this is all fairly new for me but I'm enjoying it :)

Here's the cfg, Alex, with suggestions to use until your proc is overclocked to at least 4.5 or 4.6.

Also - here is the best Inspector that I've come across thus far. It allows for heavy scenery, while getting rid of shimmering, and giving tolerable AA, when combined with the same 2 values (4xSGSS and 4xMS) in the [Graphics] section. (8xGSS is pretty hard on frames. )

[Graphics]

MultiSampleQuality=4

MultiSamplesPerPixel=4             // Must have for good AA. Using 8 is a huge perfomance killer for a very small improvement

All the Best,

Thank you Paul.  I see the alex_fsx_chgd.txt fie attached.  is there inspector attachment as well?  I'm not seeing it.  Just want to make sure i'm not blind :)

I just overclocked my CPU to 4.4Ghz.  Tried going to 4.5 but windows is not stable and crashed on me.

Duh!! Should have been -

Thar ya go! Sorry. That's what happens when I only use one finger for typing....

haha.  Thank you for your help.  Going to try these out.  Also want to see if it stays stable at 4.4Ghz.
