Looks very cool and promising BUT.....

Hello people. I recently stumbled upon TileProxy which is a very cool idea and project (downloading now), and cant wait to see it. I am just curious about a couple things;

1: Why haven't I heard about TP before? I mean, I use Prepar3D (switched from fsx) and I have never heard of it in my 2 years (not that long i know) of simming. I would've imagined that this would be a program everybody uses!

2: Are there any disadvantages? Im kind of an FPS freak so I always aim high. I currently have an i5 2500K @4.5ghz, 8GB ram, AMD 6870 1gb... (In all i have a good comp), and I have tweaked my Prepar3d config file so that i have good frames, however when I use aerosoft chicago X, it kills my fps, i turned down my autogen to very low so it helps but now i see blurry textures everywhere (since the building arent covering it up). I dont care about buildings and such which is why TP looks very cool, but will it increase or decrease my FPS? Since it it "injecting" images from the internet I would say it should use quite a bit of system recources.

3: Whats the difference between TP and VFR scnery you buy on ths internet?

Thanks for taking the time to reply and ill tell you how TP goes!

1: Why haven't I heard about TP before?

Has been on this site and others for some 10 years

It has always been BETA.

2: Are there any disadvantages?

Your computer is fine for this.

Being a Beta Product there are issues that hamper set up and tile loading.

you must read the manual and read the manual and read the manual and read the manual and read the manual.

IF NOT YOU will become your ONLY  enemy.

Slow flying aircraft best.

Depending on earth where you load tiles, can be very slow.

One season whatever the sat image is  most summer or early fall.

Some sat are up to date on images, some not.

Vista WIN 7 and 8 Driver signing becomes a huge problem for some--READ THE MANUAL==see hints Forum  about driver signing.

3: What`s the difference between TP and VFR scnery you buy on ths internet?

You nailed it COSTS

Tileproxy is a beta program and still in this format--Issues with tile servers are an issue.

I use it and works very well but slow load times

Also, in FSX always turn your FPS down to 24 or so then try. I have mine set at 25 and I get good results.

Thanks a lot for reply! hopefully you could help me out. When i load up P3D i get the window saying: Scenery.cfg file error, local scenery directory (E:\TileProxy\TileProxy Photoreal World\XXXX\SCENERY) in scenery area.XXX not found,click....      Where X is the next number. on setup I put all the directories where they should be as in: My P3D directory first, then it asks for the world and caches so i put them in my E: and i created a folder tile proxy which included 2 folders called Photoreal World and Caches. Inside caches i have 3 subfolders called: cache.service1, cach.......2,..........3. Why am i getting this error on startup? Also the scenery isnt showing up.

I do not have P3D.

Read the section on how to place caches in the section below for advice on how to place caches in a different directory.

It is an excellent guide

I don't know if your problem is similar at all, but you may want to read the last post of this thread

Little late to the party, but thought I'd chime in.

I'm a fairly new FSX user but I've looked into TileProxy, Blue Sky Scenery, Sim Savvy, and MegaSceneryEarth (the last 2 have since merged companies and now produce the MegaSceneryEarth 2.0 product).

TileProxy was alluring because it was free and includes the whole world, but it was by far the hardest to get running.  What makes it different from the other products is that it fetches images from the internet as you fly over them.  The problem with this is that the mapping sites are not fans of people pulling down that many map images and many block TileProxy from working (Google Maps is the biggest).  So there's a chance that eventually all mapping services will do this, but I guess you'd be good until then.  Also, from what I've read the developer pretty much dropped it, so there's not much help getting it running.  Like 01Generation60 said, you will need to read and re-read lots of stuff to get it running.  Even tho I got it working, it was just too much trouble, as my Windows 7 64-bit system would not run it unless I hit F8 when I was booting and booted it in a special test mode.

Blue Sky Scenery is much easier to install, you can pay whatever you want (it's donation based), but it's very small areas.  Rather than a state or even a city, you download sections.  So to get a whole city with it's suburbs and everything it's a little more complex.  But still much easier than TP.

MegaSceneryEarth 2.0 seems to be the most user-friendly but also the most pricey.  You get a whole state, but it runs about $40.  As a bonus they do throw in a bunch of extra charts for that state (high/low altitude IFR, airport diagrams, etc).

Anyway, if you're willing to put some serious wrench time in, TP might be worth the trouble.  For me it wasn't.  I'd say the $40 for states you like would probably be worth the money just cuz you'll be spending more time flying and less reading up on Windows DLLs and boot options.

As for frame rates, since most photoreal scenery is designed to be flown without auto-gen it tends to have excellent frame rates.

On a side note, I noticed you are in France.  Are you French or do you just live there?  My father is from Tahiti so I've spoken French since I was a kid.  If you're not familiar with the United States and were interested in buying one I'd suggest getting one with some mountains or valleys.  Arizona has the Grand Canyon.  Utah has some nice mountains, lakes, and the salt flats.  New Mexico has some pretty desert mountains.  And Colorado would probably be my last recommendation as it also has the Rocky Mountains and some cool farm areas.
