My old fsx intsall lasted about 3 years before it gave up after various hardware updates, moved to P3d briefly to replace FSX, but too many addons just dont work right in P3D, and one addon eventually broke the install, so i woulod not recommend P3D for addons not listed as supporting P3D. Back to FSX for me.

FSX sp2 is listed in the uninstall programs in control panel, but only recently noticed that FSX sp1 on the other hand is listed in the installed updates.

removed sp1, sp2 and put them back again, and the sim became light as a feather.

The only problem with unsintalling sp1 sp2 is , if you got UTX like me, you gona have to run the UTX setup for each region again, and probs GEX if you got that too. else you shall see many coast lines from tron legacy, that is square coast lines in english.

AS2012 graphics especially clouds has imroved to the point where i now mix rex and as2012 textures. Dont forget to set descent resolution for as2012 textures. I use Rex airport and sky textures, and all else is as2012. As2012 clouds are now much better than rex. i use 2048 resolution.

The biggest deal ever was app crashes, spent last 3 days trying to get to bottom of this, and gave up googling for solution after seeing i had clicked on all search results google turned up for new search.

So had no choice but to

1. reduce as2102 cloud layers

2. reduce lod radius from 6.5 to 4.5

3. turned down fsx texture resolution

And all the appcrashes went away, moral of the story is, appcrashes are often due to settings being too high for your system. True in my case.

UNdocked panel in fsx screen and my multi GPU nvidia gtx690.

Since getting gtx 690, i always made sure its set so both GPU's share the load equally, but noticed yesterday that if i have undocked panel on fsx screen, 90% of the load moves to one GPU, and stutters increase. However having all undocked panels on secons screen allows GPU's to do 50/50 as i prefer. So avoid undocked panels on fsx main screen if you using SLI.  Could be unique to my setting though, cause i never heard this before myself.

So dont forget to turn those sliders down, if you expereincing the dreaded fsx dll appcrashes.

Nvidia inspector settings

I am getting some good results with alainneedle1 nvdia inspector settings as per this thread

I previously used Word Not Allowed's settings for my P3D and old FSX setup, but somehow the setup above is working much better this time around. Mixed it with Word Not Allowed's setup basicly. I especially prefer to use max preredered frames which is 8, and use high performance instead of quality for texture filtering. I find this works best for me cause i use a lot of time acceleration in FSX for long flights.

And last but not least Process Laso task manager or similar is a must have for any self respecting tweaker. Forexample no more affinity masks in fsx.cfg, just setup all your CPU tweaks to shut stuff up and wake stuff up in process laso, great tool.

You think you pro at PC setup, till you miss things like installing sata driver, and all seems to work ok, nealry finished installing FSX and then, all hell broke loose on the disk drive front, and i have 5 disks. Upated BIos version and OS would not boot, OS booted and SSD not detected, Boot partition not found, drive not accesible. UNtil hours of googling symptoms lead to fact i forgot to install sata driver. Mind you FSX install was nearly complete with no noticebale issues.

And finally Back up, i use o&o, and it saved the day twice, not once, but twice during the installation. BY this i mean system refused to boot and had to recover from o&o image using USB stick. This is one nastily complex hubby, managing a real aircraft must be a dolls job compare to this, but setup and tweaking is as much fun as flying if not more. Definatly more fun than cruising anyway.  Find a scheme where you mainly use incremental backups, they are quicker thus encourage you to make backups before minor chnages.

Since backup saved the day twice, thoguht i'd mention it again, cause that backup to restore from boot CD or USb is no use unless you have tested the process. The joke was on me when i first used o&O years back, but did not realise i needed a boot device setup to run o&o from at boot time.

So test run the restoration process before you start relying on it.

And keep those sliders away from AppCrashes, else youll fall for the UIAutomationCore.dll placebo effect, i have put that file in places i would not even dare to mention, and removed it from everywhere to no effect. Just keep the sliders down will do.

By the way Backup during install, not just at the end. MY FSX setup or PC fell out 3 times during this install.

Tweak or fly its up to you, but dont crash anything...........................................

Agree, a quality backup and restore prog that boots from a USB or CD is essential, but often overlooked. For the price of a payware add-on the ability to go back to a previous good copy is priceless. I image every few days,or before any significant download. I keep about 5 good copies, then keep dropping the last one. It's saved me so many times.

Also a great way of determining whether a tricky problem is hardware or software, if you go back to your last good copy, and the problem still occurs, it's hardware... can save a lot of time...
