FSX fatal error on startup - faulting module nvwgf2um.dll

I'm running Windows 7, FSX Deluxe with SP2, and getting a fatal error trying to run FSX. The following entry in the event log seems to point to a problem with nvwgf2um.dll

What is nvwgf2um.dll?

What do I need to do to fix this?

I have updated to the current GeForce 314.22 driver but still get the error.

Indicates your NVidia display driver did not install properly.  It could possibly be caused by a bad display driver setting or a setting in your FSX.cfg.  For instance, in your FSX.cfg, if you make a mistake and put the wrong texture resolution to load (i.e., Texture_Max_Load=2048 and you accidentally enter 2038 instead of 2048), fsx could crash with this faulting module.  Before uninstalling/reinstalling your display drivers, try renaming your FSX.cfg then restarting FSX and let the config rebuild.

OK.... tried renaming fsx.cfg and it still failed to start. All that was put in the new fsx.cfg was the following:

I see you have the GTX 260 (and the GT 520 too?).  I think the 314.22 update was for 400, 500, and 600 series cards.  That might be the problem.  The drivers are not compatible with your GTX 260.  From your fsx.cfg it appears you have 5 monitors, two at resolution 1280x720 and three at 1024x768? You might also have one at 1920x1080 as there is a display entry for that resolution too. That might be your problem too but I'm not familiar with multi-monitor setups.  I would think though that with that many monitors you should have a bit more GPU power behind the monitors.  You can try deleting all the display entries like, [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 .3], restart FSX and let them identify them again.

 

In the Graphics section you need to add the line:

 

highmemfix=1

 

It is not actually a graphics tweak but a fix that Microsoft forgot to add with the release of SP2/Acceleration.

 

In the Display section you should change WideViewAspect=False to True as you appear to have wide screen monitors.  Also in the Display section your Texture_Bandwidth_Multi should be set to 80.  40 is a little low.

 

Since you started up FSX and let it rebuild your FSX.cfg, most likely there isn't anything wrong with the config but a problem with the display drivers.  In other words, it is not an FSX issue but a system issue.  The module that continues to fault and cause crashes is one of the NVidia display drivers.  Again, I have a feeling it does not like the "upgrade" you gave it.  I would go back to one of the drivers that worked.

Jim, I really appreciate your attempt to help me with this!

 

I've double checked the GeForce forums and the 314.22 driver DOES support GTX260. Documentation says performance is improved for 400,500,600 series. Regardless, I DID go back and try the old drivers that I originally had and I still get the error at FSX startup. When I said I deleted FSX.CFG and let it rebuild FSX did not start that time either so the CFG was incomplete.

 

I do have both the GTX260 and GT520 cards. I have three wide screen monitors and one smaller screen. I've tried telling NVIDIA to use only one screen and I still get the error at FSX startup. Everything had worked fine with multiple monitors for quite a while. I came home from vacation and everything was messed up.

 

I tried your suggestion of removing all display devices such as [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 .3] from fsx.cfg and tried running again. FSX failed to start and the fsx.cfg did not identify any monitors. There were no display device entries.

 

I also have Prepar3D installed so I tried to run it and got the same startup error referencing nvwgf2um.dll. So I agree it's not a problem with FSX.

 

Something that might help. My research of nvwgf2um.dll references it as being part of the NVIDIA D3D10 drivers. I'm not exactly sure what that means. I'm guessing it has something to do with DirectX 10 possibly. Using that as a hypothisis, I decided to uninstall FSX SP2. I did that and tried to run FSX. It did not crash at startup. It launched, but did not display a graphic of the aircraft in the free flight setup. When I tried to launch a flight it just hung. However, it did get past the startup problem. I reinstalled the SP2 and I still get the startup error with FSX referencing the dll. So the DLL appears to be the culprit.

 

When I search my computer for nvwgf2um.dll I don't find it anywhere. It's supposed to be in Windows\System32. Not there.

 

So I'm still searching for an answer. Beginning to think I will have to drop all the way back to a reinstall of Windows. I've got a ton of add-on software so I don't look forward to that.

 

Any other ideas?

I noticed in the [Graphics] section of the fsx.cfg that D3D10=0. I changed it to D3D10=1 as follows:

Prepar3D still fails with the dll reference. I couldn't find a place to change D3D10 in the prepar3d.cfg.

All you did was enable DX10 Preview so I do not understand your "fix" at all.  DX10 would not make FSX crash.  It was a total fluke that FSX ran (unless you enabled those fixes I suggested above too).  If you look in the AVSIM forums, there's a DX10 forum and you should install Steve's Shader fix if you haven't already.

 

I apologize for getting up your dander on the GTX 260.  I was just saying the upgrade states it is for the 400 series and above graphics cards.  Your FSX.cfg stated you had a GT 520 so that's in the 500 series at least.  I was just thinking it might have been part of the reason for your CTD's. 

 

P3d should be DX10 compatible.  Just go into your FSX settings and enable DX10 Preview.

Not to worry... you didn't get my dander up about GTX260. When I ran the GeForce scan of my system from their website that was the recommended driver.

 

I had not made the other changes you recommended so I have no idea why what I did made it work either. I will continue to investigate and look at trying your suggestions and the shader fix.

Just wanted to close this out. I finally decided to do a restore from a backup. Now all is well and everything is working.
