MD-11 Flaps get screwed up

Featured Replies

There are a few issues that I see on the MD-11 with the flaps.

Similar to what I reported with the F1 Dc-9 (but told you to disregard, because I haven't been able to reproduce since on that plane), "Flaps Up" is interpreted to mean both Flaps AND Slats retract, which we don't want.  This is a problem because after takeoff, it is typical to say Flaps Up when we pass the FR retract bug, and then Slats Up when we pass the SR bug.  Therefore, this behavior is causing us to clean up too early.  Independently, the command Slats Extend and Slats Retract, both work as they should.

Dial-A-Flaps is problematic.  If Flaps/Slats are fully retracted and I say Flaps 15, it will work.  If I then say Flaps 28, that works.  If I then again say Flaps 15, he will Dial the Flaps to 22, and set that.  There are other quirks in this, depending on what the current Dial-A-Flap setting is compared to what I tell him to do.  If I go in and change the DialaFlap setting myself, it also tends to mess things up.

There also seems to be an occasional issue with Flap commands that skip one or more settings.  If I'm landing at Flaps 50 and have to do a go around, I'm going to say "Flaps 15."  That tends to screw him up because he then has to move the lever past several flaps settings.  The problem described above, where he sets the wrong Dial-A-Flap setting also appears to occur in this situation as well.

I should mention that on the PMDG 737, I've noticed that he gets confused by flap commands that skip detents as well, on occasions, but I can't pin it down, so maybe this issue is not simply limited to the MD-11.

Not really the case. It's just a misunderstood behavior.

FO expects flaps to be extended in increments. If you ask for a detent that is 2 notches or more from the actual position, he will assume it's an accidental command and will want confirmation.

Just reply with any of these and he will set the flaps to whatever detent you asked

Yes please

...etc

...etc

Alternatively, if the requested detent was the result of a mistake, just tell him the new detent to set.

The request for confirmation applies to many critical things. Even things like switching auto-throttle off.
