RETRACTION of observation: A.S. 2004.5 memory leak...

Featured Replies

I must retract my initial observation that it was A.S. 2004.5 that is leaking my memory on my system. In fact, it is not.FS9 is!Active Sky sits around 28.8 MB constant. After further snooping, it is FS9 that is climbing in memory usage to about 1.78 GB where the XP BONG goes off,and the ERROR report says that I have run out of physical memory. I'm trying to understand ***WHY*** FS9 is constantly using up my memory addresses as it runs until that proves fatal....and the program locks up.I am using the FS9 patch and am running SP 2.Again, it was NOT Active Sky that was taking my memory down. Please disregard my first (Active SKY) post, as it turned out inaccurate after further delving in.Thank you,Mitch R.

Sounds like the usual landclass file in the wrong place memory leak to me.Have you installed any landclass?Dan.

Yes I did. Ontario Landclass in the AddonSceneryI have since removed it. Could you please tell me what this landclass fault is, the why of it, and how I can NOT fall into this trap again. Thanks in advance!!!!Mitch R.

Landclass should be placed in the scenery folder of an otherwise empty folder, in particular there should not be a texture folder present. -

If you place a landclass bgl file in a scenery folder that has an associated texture folder, like addonscenery/scenery has (its addonscenery/texture), then you will cause a large memory leak.I place all my landclass files in addonscenery/landclass/scenery, with NO texture folder.Dan.

Thank you VERY MUCH!I did place Justin Tyme's TOTAL U.S. landclass bgl in the Scenery folder of the Addon!I will place it into it's own folder with NO TEXTURE as you mention. That could be my drain. You had to see it to believe it, Dan. I watched the resource die, 30 megs at a time...I'll run FS9 and see if that stops the leak. BTW, my FS9 usually runs around 550 MB's. I don't know how someone with only 512 RAM does it?!?!?!?Cheers!Mitch R.

Dan, that was it!That was it!You are a life-saver!Take a bow....No more memory leak in FS9. I sit mean average now around 650 MB with Active Sky also cranked up.It doesn't go beyond that MB usage figure now.Thank you again. The finest resource that AVSIM has---is its USERS! Their experience, and feedback. How many problems are put to rest because of them! :)Cheers!Mitch R.

Does this count for all .bgl scenery files, or are landclass special? For instance, I just installed some scenery that's two airports in B.C. In the addonscenery folder there are plenty of .bgl files. Some for this scenery, some for minor fixes to some errors microsoft made in the default scenery. But I also have a separate folder named "Devils Cliff" in the AddonScenery folder. In it there is also a scenery folder and a texture folder. Do I have anything to worry about, or is there a big difference between landclass files and scenery files, or are they both the same?...good grief batman, I think I'm confused!

It will only happen with Landclass (LC) bgl files.Dan.

"If you place a landclass bgl file in a scenery folder that has an associated texture folder, like addonscenery/scenery has (its addonscenery/texture), then you will cause a large memory leak."This is usually, but not always the case. The following is a copy/paste of a post by Holger Sandmann:Hi there, don't want to complicate the issue but if an expert says that a landclass file "MUST NEVER have a texture subfolder" I get nervous because some of my landclass projects indeed REQUIRE the accompanying texture folder (with local replacement textures) to work as intended. I don't want people to go on wild chases of landclass files, moving them all into a common folder and then complaining that my stuff (and perhaps similar landscape projects of others) doesn't work For explanation regarding the exemptions, see here: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...g_id=202&page=2Cheers, HolgerHolger does fantastic work and I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on it by not installing properly.David
