I was just thinking of all the upgrades I've gone through the years for Flight Simulation and how I should buy more powerful parts and perhaps be able to put off "stupid" upgrades:

1982 Apple ][, floppies, green screen - school computer, so not mine

1987 AT&T 6300 (Intel 8086 at 8 mhz) with 5.25" 10 meg hard drive, green screen, 2400 baud modem

circa 1989 Started building my own - Intel 80386SX 16 mhz (or was it 33?) 30 meg 3.5" hard drive on a card, paper white monitor (I could not afford a color one yet as I was in college), 2400 modem.

1996 Intel Pentium 3 @ 450 mhz.  Someone gave me a 15" VGA monitor.

year? AMD 2400, then I got the AMD 2800, but never worked right with an older motherboard.  My brother in law gave me a 19" monitor.  I bought a used 19" monitor, so I have two.  At least two Radeon video cards.  so, here various monies wasted and burned.

circa 2003 Intel E6300 - really did not use it much, it became  a DVR based on MythTV and still used today.  I bought three video cards trying to make it last, but ended up having to get another one for MythTV that had HD video engine ability (I cannot think of the technology name now.

2008 Intel i7 920 GTX 285, now GTX 560ti (trying to save money again, but should of gone perhaps a $100 or so more to 670).  I bought a 23" LED.

Maybe this year or next i7 4770k.

The early years were very difficult with the poor graphics and green or white monitors.  CPUs were still pretty expensive, but have come down in price, making the higher end ones a bit more affordable.
