It's ensuring the crew is awake and alert because there hasn't been any interaction with plane. During standard ops the crew will be periodically interacting with the aircraft.

 

Gotta make sure someone is minding the store on long trips. Interact with the panel and it will extinguish. :-)

Im not sure since i dont have it nor do i no much about it, but if you have not touched anything for i think 45mins to 1 hr the plane sends a message to see if your still there/alert.
