Anyone still using Windows 98se??

Featured Replies

Hi,I have a quick question about a fs2004 issue I'm currently having which I think is because I'm using windows 98se..Have recently been getting into (or trying to get into..) aircraft with more complex panels like the freeware fanda dash8 and Eric Marciano's airbus a320 panels etc. I really like the panels etc. but every time I fly these aircraft for about an hour trip I end up with an unflyable slideshow on touchdown. I'm not running autogen/traffic etc so normally things would be good (eg. just using default ac) but in these cases my resources/memory get eaten up big time over time.I read a case on the other site where a guy was saying he would get a memory leak whenever he used addon ac like these which needed fsuipc. Luckily his ac would still work mostly ok without fsuipc and he would get no memory degradation. Unfortunately for me my ac don't work without fsuipc (although the airbus loads but the warning horn is constantly going off!!). Loads of people seem to use these ac/panels and others with fsuipc with no memory leak issues under windows xp. Was just wondering if anyone else is still using 98se and having this issue (or even having this issue under xp). I love 98se (until now that is..) and don't want to upgrade but will this finally be the thing that makes me move on?Also the default fs9 gps has always been a massive resource eater on my 98se machine (I normally have been using Acsgps for fs98 instead!!). Don't know maybe these things are connected.Any help would be greatThanks,PierreSystem: Pcchips mb, Sempron 2300, 512mb ram, Gef3 Ti420 64mb, Onboard sound, Windows 98se(!!)

W98SE kept up to date. All unnecessary background tasks off.I do not seem to have the problems you describing. I get slow at some detailed airports (down occasionally to 12 FPS) but I am also using ActiveSky 2004.5, FSUIPC 3.411, Radar Contact 3.1, 85% Traffic from UT2 plus other traffic. 3D clouds at 85% sight draw 60. Mesh and landclass from RealScene USA 2004.I also run with 768 RAM. Search the hardware forum for "VCACHE" if you have any questions about that. CPU is 2.53 GHz, Video is GeForce 6800GT 256. Audio is seperate card Digifire 7.1. accelerated in DX9.0b to one step above basic. Video tuning is midway between detailed and performance. Ginf into FS and add-ons I have 500 MB available.I expect to swap mobo and proc to 3.2 or 3.4 GHz seeing how W98SE works under that. FS is 9.1.

Pierre, I have W98se and whilte I'm not having this issue, not sure can help...but I do use a utility before running FS 9.1. It defrags my memory, called Ram Def XT. You could prob run it while running FS and clean out your memory...worth a try. Can downloard here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2195.html or herehttp://www.utilitygeek.com/details.php?fileid=275great little utility. hope this helps, Randy

Not SE, I use Windows 98 on an old P1 266MHz and it runs FS fine, slow but fine.

Hi,Thanks for the replies. It's good to know that windows98 and 98se are still working out there. It's weird because I never get any memory buildup problems except with the gps and now these two panels (the frolov dash8 and marciano's airbus). Just wish I didn't want to fly these aircraft a lot!! Part of me is thinking it's maybe to do with these ac using their own nav databases and fsuipc and something's not getting released. Might try a flight with the airbus panel, no fsuipc, the warning horn going off constantly (and my speaker volume way down!!) just to see if it is an fsuipc issue. Might also try the memory manager thing, although would prefer to fix it if I can without having to run any other programs with fs (it pretty much has it's own non-internet pc with a pretty fresh install of 98se and no other progs running and I normally shut down / restart before loading fs9..)Might also try increased ram (have an extra 128mb and slot here) or even going back to 98 original (have a copy of that too). Man, how far will I go to not have to buy Xp!!ThanksPierre

Pierre,I had similar problems always at the touchdowns as well. Two things helped me a lot and now I rarely have a pause or slide shows prior to touchdown.1. Turned down the scenery complexity from dense to medium.2. Take a look at the sound.cfg on the airplane you are having issues with. Look toward the end and look for the touchdown and roll sound entries. Now if your touchdown and roll sound files are big, the computer will have a hard time loading these files right before the touchdown and give you a slide show. I look for an alternate files of less than 50kb in size.Hopefully, this will help. For me, #2 helped more than #1.

I have had situations where extended external add-on driven audio for long speech loops causing stutters or pauses. If I let external program ATIS loop many times it sometimes causes a crash. I am using a seperate audio card.See my entry above for the sys description.

I went from 98 to 98SE required for higher processing speeds due to operating system timing and mem management issues. It is much more stable and less trouble with audio for me. I suggest you not go back to 98.Remember that when you kill fsuipc you are also disabling the application threads using it. This might give the appearance of fsuipc causing the problem when it could be the application. After each flight in the modules folder you can look at with notepad or wordpad the fsuipc.log file to see if there might be any errors recorded.Using the performance utility in the background occasionally switch to it before loading FS and during to check on your free physical ram, allocated ram, swap use, and proc use (set these up). It is an accessory that comes with versions of 98 and needs to be installed and configured.Use not less than 512 mb sys ram with no shared video. 768 with the vcache cheat is better (search for it).

Let me get this straight...you are running fs2004 on a P1 266mhz machine?!!? And I thought I was doing well running fs2002 on a P2 400 mhz machine. Unbelievable, simply unbelievable... tell me a little bit more about your system specs, please.

Thanks for all above.Gonna go try a flight with a newer version of fsuipc and Ram Def XT ready to hopefully free things up if everything gets filled badly. Will also check fsuipc log. Here goes nothing!!Pierre

HiTried the flight last night. Was for about an hour IFR with the airbus panel, cruise at FL300. In general wasn't too bad on final approach but things really started feeling clogged up more than I would like from about halfway through the flight and final approach although flyable (well the autopilot was flying pretty good!) wasn't really easily flyable or pleasurable (the memory just felt filled up and performance wasn't smooth). In more detail using system monitor I recorded the following (using 512mb ddr ram):- By the time I had filed flight plan, set up radios etc, got clearance and started taxi things already felt pretty used up. Sysmon gave me: Unused mem ~140mb Allocated mem ~400mb- So I reloaded the sim (without a computer reboot) and on the taxiway was at: Unused mem ~200mb Allocated mem ~350mbThings definitely felt better- By the time I got to the hold short line was at: Unused mem ~180mb Allocated mem ~370mb(I guess things were starting to build up already but was still ok to fly)- During the flight things weren't too bad but this was nothing like flying the default 737!! Memory resources just seemed to get used up slowly over time/distance: About 1/3 or way through: Unused mem ~155mbAllocated mem ~405mb Descending near 20,000ft: Unused mem ~150mbAllocated mem ~415mb Final approach: Unused mem ~100mbAllocated mem ~460mb Parked / engines off: Unused mem ~80mbAllocated mem ~490mbI then reloaded the sim and went straight back to the parked / engines off situation: Parked / eng off (reload):Unused mem ~140mbAllocated mem ~425mb(things felt better but not great)Then I quit the sim an ran Ram Def XT which gave me the following figures on 70 secs defragmentation: Available memory: 115mb -----> 290mb Used memory: 395mb -----> 220mb Page File used: 238mb -----> 238mbThings felt better again after this and sysmon showed (I think when the sim was reloaded) Parked / eng off (RmDfXT + reload):Unused mem ~285mbAllocated mem ~340mbFinally I shut down / restarted the pc and reloaded the sim. Man, things only felt really better with a system shut down. I got the following but most importantly the system felt cleared up (well at least for the next 15minutes!!) Parked / eng off (after shut down): Unused mem ~170mbAllocated mem ~400mbAnd just for reference this morning loaded up the default cessna / Seattle ap situation: Default cessna / Seattle situation: Unused mem ~215mbAllocated mem ~345mbIf anyone has actually read all this post and has any ideas would be cool!! Otherwise I guess it's just a 'feature' of more complex panels on my system. Might try adding more ram when using these panels or maybe my descent checklist will have to be:1. Run Ram Def XP to clean up avionics and aircraft handlingMan, good job real ac don't have to use 98se and this kinda software!!Thanks (& apologies for the long post)Pierre

FYI: I may have missed this in your thread, but I suggest you rename in the FS9 Autogen folder default.xml to something else for the extension. Even though the .1 patch claimed to fix this mem leak, it still takes resources for some power lines, gas stations, and fast food places. Before this was fixed as people flew in areas where autogen objects appeared of this nature for long periods, the sim would slow and crash. Either way, you might wish to free up these ground details. Major objects still remain in force.

Pierre, regarding the Ram Def XP ..I keep its icon on the desktop... using " RAMDef.exe -silent "I run it 2-3 x , one right after the other...usually the first time doesnt completely defrag the RAM..by the 2nd or 3rd time I get my used RAM down to 63MB. Then I run FS...I wonder if you , while in FS, use the window mode briefly, (Alt-enter..I think)..and then switch to desktop and run Ram Def XP...see what happens.Randy

HiAm not using autogen and have default.xml renamed although I haven't upgraded to fs9.1 (yet!!).. I guess things for me aren't as bad as things were once with the default.xml enabled and full autogen - man, that killed my system last time I had it!!As for Ram Def XT I guess I'll start using it with these panels (especially with the frolov dash8 which I can't save that easily during flights). Thanks for the tip - it seems a pretty nice program, just hitting alt-ent and running the normal version, although I may try it more than once as suggested next.ThanksPierre
