Well, I have to write about an observation I made today:Normally with FS you have white, snowy ground textures between certain dates depending on the latitudes you are flying above..OK. I flew today in VATSIM a couple of hours ago from ENBR (Bergen, Norway) to EKYT (Aalborg, Denmark) through high mountains and the ground below me was green..And right now I finished a flight to Manchester, UK, in VATSIM, and found somewhere during my descent that it was snowing.. I asked the ATC if "it's really snowing right now in England???". He said yes.. somewhere in the Sheffield area..What is peculiar this time to me is that many ground textures in Sheffield area and south were white.. it seemed that this time the whole FS reflected the real wx conditions.. This was new to me. :)Petteri PulkkinenVihti, Finland

I am not sure what exactly you were seeing. But snow accumulation on the ground in real time - I don't think such a feature exists now in FS9.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2

Michael...I have seen snow accumulate on the ground in both FS2002 and FS2004 if precip. is set to snow. The ground textures seem to update a regular intervals, something like 1-2 minutes apart--they first appear slightly covered with slow, then greater coverage, eventually going to full coverage. I had a great bit of fun once setting up snow in Phoenix, and the ground was covered in snow after a short period. That made me feel rather cool on one of our summer afternoons...I don't know if this is controlled by an effects file, however. Some features of MSFS have sometimes been overwritten when developers include obsolete effects files in their releases. Or, it may be tied to the level effects is set at--I keep mine at max.-John

Yes. This is what I think I was amazed at.. In Norway, Finland etc. there should be snow on the ground far before that in Britain.. and it has been like this always in FS: the date and the latitude tell the sim which ground textures to show.. but after tonight i'm a bit confused.. sth to do with teh 9.1 ?Petteri

The date and latitude should still determine if the ground textures have snow by default.I know it's still working in 9.1 because one of my common flight scenarios is flying out of SLC. I bump the date into the late winter, and I am in a winter wonderland. SLC is much further south than Norway and the other Northern European countries. Even without any precip, you should be seeing some snow. Try bumping the date into December and see if there's a difference...-John

I'm not sure either on the snow accumulation on the ground. Still, the line between grass and snow in the northern regions is very well represented in fs.First you will get snow on higher peeks, then higher terrain, then everywhere; all depending on the date you're flying (october and november). Samething if you're flying south where you will take off in the snow and as you go deeper south there will be less and less snow coverage.I will give a try at the snow accumulation theory tonight..

"I will give a try at the snow accumulation theory tonight.."When you give it a try, max your precip amount and wait a few moments before the snow appears. I don't know if outside air temp is factored in, but it may be in the situations where I've seen the snow accumulate. I'll try to post my Phoenix example in the screenshots forum later this evening--should be good for a few laughs...-John

Well i just did it, and snow does appear on the ground too... Here's the picture of it , and i also included a pic showing the nice transition between snow and grass. On the second picture (actually 4 in 1), you can see the before/during and after effect. The snow came up after about 30 seconds (at 4X speed). The snow coverage is about the size of a scenery tile for that area. However it does not melt ;-) I don't remember if someone ever worked on the ice coverage of the lakes and rivers, but it's kind of odd to see water up north at -25c

OK folks, I learned something new about FS9 today ! Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2
