September 20, 201312 yr Gents, I currently have a i7 2600K processor. Is there any other one, for FSX, which will be significantly better than what I currently have? Or, is there any CPU out there curently being developed, that we should be keeping our eyes on ? Hi Mark, The whole discussion really depends on what you consider 'significant'. One person's 'significant' is another person's 'hardly worth the hassle and cost'. Are you running your 2600K overclocked, and if so what are you running at? Since a new CPU will involve a new motherboard for you, and quite possibly other memory, etc, we would need to know what % total improvement per dollar spent will do it for you. Briefly, if you are already overclocked and plan to do so w/ a new build, likely the MOST you will see is a 15% improvement in frame rate, and (I believe) a bit more in the 'smoothness' department quite possibly w/ the new build. So, in practical terms if you are in a very difficult to process scenario (sliders close to maxed, custom scenery like FTX PNW, in the PMDT7 or NGX, at KSEA, you current if overclocked well are going to be looking at maybe 16 or so frames on the active runway. That's a total guesstimate, and also assumes as is the case your CPU is generally more overclockable than any processor line since your's debuted. By doing the biggest upgrade possible today, barring very exotic cooling solutions, you're like to go from 16 to 19 frames and the new build will, depending on everything you decide to upgrade might cost you $1000-$2000. So is moving from 16 to 19 going to do it for you for that cost? Again, my sense is that you will pick up more smoothness, not just more frames. If you're already overclocking and don't tax your system much w/ high end scenery & airplanes the point is pretty much moot as you already have arrived in the Promised Land if set up well. It's the hard-to-process stuff you're upgrading to try to improve. September 23, 201312 yr Thank, Noel. It makes good sense what you say. And yes mine is oc to 4.4 Ghz. Runs well , orver all. But it does slows woth ehavy scenry like KSEA and a high quality airplane. So, it sounds like I'm better off sticking with my current cpu. I appreciatte your response.
