Some of you may remember several years ago when a China Air Lines Boeing 747SP had a problem and dropped into a very steep dive and I'm quite sure it did break the sound barrier, but it also sustained a tremendous amount of damage as well. I recall seeing photographs of that aircraft and it was no longer flyable, the damage was so severe.
