What is the Proper Approach?

Featured Replies

I was flying PANC-PADQ and at Kodiak, MS FS ATC had problems.First the winds were 210 @ 9 and FS ATC gave me a Visual Approach to runway 11 instead of an ILS approach to runway 25 (winds were MUCH closer to 25).Runway 11 is a pretty difficult approach (or FS ATC didn't give me the proper vectoring and altitude assignment to do the approach). After going around twice and being vectored twice for the approach, I finally gave up.It appears that you have to verify the approaches at the destination airport PRIOR to doing your flight (with the airports in the sticks, I guess). Then use AFCAD2 to close those runways with dangerous departures and / or approaches, or approaches that FS ATC would potentially have problems with vectoring. When I departed Kodiak, FS ATC gave me runway 25 which has a mountain or terrain obsticle that is for sure. So what is the ruling in in the real world? If the conditions were IFR, then I would have been assigned runway 25 (which again FS ATC should have assigned me anyway). Unless I had a 40 + knot tailwind? What is the pecking order for approaches? I tried to select another approach and specify ILS Approach Runway 25. But FS ATC replied with cleared for ILS Runway 25 Approach, circle to land runway 11. Again looking at the terrain, it didn't look practical and safe. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!Barry

ATC will normally give you the runway, where you are landing more into the wind. If landing on R25, the wind at 21 shifted to 24 or even 25, that could result in Wind Shear, and a dramatic crash. What you can do landing on R11, is set the autopilot to BC or Back Course, which will allow using the ILS on R11... This may not five you a glide slope, but it will help line up with the runway in ILS conditions. Now, in AFCAD, you can even set up an ILS, so you could set one up for R11... Bob

Well I can at least tell you what you should do in the case of the Kodiak Airport takeoff. The airport diagram specifies that RW 25 is not available for take-off so you should check that it is closed for take-off, using the AFCAD program. And when requesting a different aproach make sure you also request a new runway or else ATC will either issue a sidestep or a circle to land.

Thanks for the repies...I did close R25 with AFCAD2. But I am wondering if you need to verify that all the airports you depart from and fly in to match approach and departure procedures, especially ones that involve terrain.Actually according to Airnav.com: TAKE OFF RWY 25 OR RWY 29 OR LNDG RWY 7 OR RWY 11 NOT RECOMMENDED DRG HRS OF DARKNESS OR WHEN MTN PEAKS ARE OBSCD. However, it doesn't say that R25 take-offs are not allowed. But in FS 2004, there is NO WAY I would depart from this runway.I looked in the Project AI AFCAD database for PADQ and no one has submitted this airport. I am pretty sure the people that do the AFCADS to submit are looking at many aspects and differences between the default MS settings and what is reality.I still don't know why I was given R11 when winds were 210 @ 9 and the flight plan was IFR.Barry
