CPU upgrade

Featured Replies

Dear all,

I need your help or advice about new CPU for my PC. Now I have AMD Phenom II 965 BE overclocked from 3.4 GHz to stable 3.8 Ghz. I cannot get more. I mostly fly in Europe and I would like to have better performance in some cities (it's not so bad, but few more FPS would be nice). I'm wondering if it helps me (is it worth?) to change it for AMD FX-4350 with 4.2 GHz without OC (4.5 GHz possibly with OC)?

I know Intel is better, but right now I don't want to change the whole PC because I have another expenses (building a house). I will build new PC next year and it will be Intel, dedicated only for FSX. This PC I have now will remain as second gaming PC and for FSX addons.

Thank you

regards

Ziki

I have a 960T OC'ed to 3.8 and can also unlock it to a hex , after a few tweaks using Bojotes tweaker and DX10 I pull comfortable frame rates. But only in certain areas. But now I am removing the desktop so I shall be using it on  my Satellite which is Yes better. I do not have any addons except the freeones :).

What GPU are you using ?

FX-4350 may not cut it. If you already have an AM3+ motherboard than the minimum should be 6300 or 8320 and OC it like hell.  I cannot personally guarantee you the FSX performance on the FX chips as the FX chips are a tad below the Phenoms in single threaded apps and FSX is a sucker for clock speeds.  I have seen some videos on youtube where a couple of them are using the 6300 and the 8300 series in FSX and they say it is running superbly now how far it is true I have no idea.  Have you tried the Bojotes tweaks and the DX10 patches ?  I think EHAM gives me good frames on my AMD. I have made a post in the FSX section "fallen in love" , hopefully you could follow that and try it before getting the new CPU.

As I asked what is the GPU you are using.

Thank you for your reply.

I'm using GTX660 with 3GB DDR5 RAM. I've tried Bojotes tweaks, but Word Not Allowed's guide works better for me. Yesterday I bought SteveFX - DX10 Scenery Fixer and now FSX performes better a bit.

I'm also using many addons: REX+UTX+AS2012+FTXG+Shade, few airports from FlyTampa (but performance on those airports is good) and PMDG airplanes.

Thats a good GPU but your CPU may not cope up with it. What resolution are you using ?

If you can fly well after using Steves FX then why not stick to the current CPU and upgrade later.

The addons Like REX-UTX may hamper your frames.

I will change my PC next winter 2014/2015 but until that it is plenty of flight hours and I'm considering just CPU change for now.

If your motherboard is an AM3+ then

8320

I decided to go to 8350 but in shop I saw i5 4670k almost for the same money so I will go for Intel. I just need new MB, but it's only 100 Euro and I can spare some money.

Thank you all for your help.

Cool. My friend is going for the 8350 today as he only wants an amd.

yes your cost will increase due to the new motherboard.
