Need Help With Stutters...

Recommended Posts

Hi All,I am getting a stutter with FS. After about two minutes of flying the stutter begins. About every 30 seconds I get a " da da da da " stutter...seems to happen more around heavy scenery areas.I have removed all my FS files and did a complete reinstall and they are still accuring. I have a P4@3.0 ghz with 1024 ram and a radeon 9800 pro with 128 megs and the latest Radeon drivers installed. Before the stutter I was in FS heaven with my set up. Ran: UT AS2-4.5 FSRoads FSWater and Skyworld 2004. Not to mention PMDG products and others....one more thing. About six months ago I had a similar problem, but the stutter was caused by a faulty HDD that was skipping. With that stutter I saw the teatures trying to tile into place, which casued the stutter. This stutter is just a stutter all the ground textures are looking good concerning rendering. Hope someone can give me some advice here..I am feeling drained with the whole thing. I am amazed how FS has effected my life and how important it is for me to have FS all running well. :(Looking For A Great VA...Check Us Out.http://www.airpr.net/crew/robertbanner.jpg]This Hobby Just Keeps Getting Better... :-yellow1Take CareRobertRadeons ROCK The FS World http://www.emotipad.com/newemoticons/Guitar.gif[/img://http://www.airpr.net/crew/robertban...ar.gif[/img

I'm assuming you shut down all needless background programs, like anti-virus, MSMessenger etc.? Also, you might want to run DXDiag through the run command.Have you switched video drivers lately?Make sure you use Spysweeper found at download.com. For me it finds many things that adaware doesn't.Go to tweakxp.com and learn how to turn many needless system services to manual, free's up some resources.Just some tips that you may not know, or this could all be redundant:-)

There is one thing that I have found to work at removing the stutters from a high-end system. That is to lower the PCI latency of your graphics card, there are normally set way too high. You can either use this prog > http://www.audiotrack.co.kr/spboard/board....page=1&go_cnt=0 or powerstrip to lower the latency of your graphics card, I have found 64 gives the best results for my X800pro.Dan.

Also, if you fly with any type of 3-d clouds (cumulus and stratus), you may see a momentary slow down in fps every 30-60 seconds depending on how fast you fly. This is because FS9, in order to keep clouds consistently drawn around the aircraft, will "erase" clouds out of range and draw new ones in range to take their place. It is this erase/draw process that slows performance down a tad. Seldom is it noticeable unless you're flying at a fairly high speed at a low altitude. A GA pilot may not notice it at all if their flight is within a fairly small area. One common software/hardware cause of a stutter is caused by enhanced keyboards with customizable buttons. I have one, and its software caused a marked stutter exactly 60 seconds apart. I disabled the software, and all was back to normal.Last, as part of my job I support users with workstations, laptops, etc.... Recently I had a user complain of a massive slowdown of his system. I knew the problem right away--a "Drive By Download" (aka--Spyware). The program installed was chewing up over 100 megs of memory (until I destroyed it, that is). -John

Robert,You need to download said program, and then use that to change the graphics card latency from its default setting, around 328, to 64.Dan.

Hi DanI DL'd the PCI Latency Toll 2.0. One question. Out of the list what latency are you refering to? The only number I see higher than 64 is the VGA Compatible Controller set at 248. The PCI Bridge is set to 64.Bill3.0g w/2g ramAsus P4G800BFG nVidia 6800GT

Have you run a disk defragmentation lately? That can never hurt.

Well, basically it controls how much each device can "hog" the PCI bus, in theory each device should have the same latency so one isnt hogging resources from another, but for some reason the graphics card manufacturers deem it fit to bump up the latency so the grahpics cards can hog resources, this can lead to stutters.Use the program above to lower the latency of your graphics device.Dan.

Natually they all want their devices to work properly and with the minimum hassle. So they take a "safe" amount of the bus. Of course, it is the hardware manufacturers who decide for themselvles what is a "safe" amount. ATI and nVidia claim a huge amount of the bus for their video cards. Creative also takes too much for their sound cards. I've been running all my latencies on this system and a few others I manage at 32 clks for years without a single problem. To Robert (the original poster)... if your system was running fine recently then the probelm could be just as JohnCi mentioned. HijackThis (Google) works quite well at finding the offending buggers. Also, the problem could have been created by a recent software install that is claiming excesssive resources that you had available for simming. If you're unfamilar with HijackThis then you should download and install on your system, then have it scan. Don't go deleting, removing or otherwise buggering your registry before posting a log of the HJT log here. We can then assist in isolating the problem.Cheers,Greg

Hi All, I just want to say thanks for all the help. I have found my problem...at least I think so, the stutters have ceased.I have a Freedom 2.4 cordless joystick by logic tech. This seems to have broke or something. I noticed odd things happening and thus not being able to cabibrate it anymore. I reinstalled the latest drivers and found that my aircraft was just spinning in circles on the ground and impossiable to control. I removed the drivers and unpluged the USB stick. The stutters are now gone. XP does not seem to sense the stick once plug-in, but does show in the control panel under game controllers...just can not do anything with it as far as calibration. I guess it is time for a good old microsoft stick. It is a shame, had this stick for just over a year and now it seems broke...at least it will not work. Good Thing Christmas is near. It will take me that long to get everything back installed and with any luck a new stick will be under the tree....any ideas why the stick broke??Looking For A Great VA...Check Us Out.http://www.airpr.net/crew/robertbanner.jpg]This Hobby Just Keeps Getting Better... :-yellow1Take CareRobertRadeons ROCK The FS World http://www.emotipad.com/newemoticons/Guitar.gif[/img://http://www.airpr.net/crew/robertban...ar.gif[/img

Greg,Below is my HiJackThis log that I hope you can help me with. I presume the cut&paste was recommended by TomCoyote's website to prevent any bugs from being transmitted.I haven't gotten around to checking the latency yet because I don't fully understand it, but I DL'd the tool.Another question about the FS9 cfg. Under DISPLAY Texture_Bandwidth_Mult 400. What does it do? I set it at 400 because of a forum recommendation. I thought I noticed the stutters were smaller and not as noticeable. Thanks Daryll********************************************************************Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2Scan saved at 11:17:29 PM, on 12/9/2004Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Running processes:C:WINDOWSSystem32smss.exeC:WINDOWSsystem32winlogon.exeC:WINDOWSsystem32services.exeC:WINDOWSsystem32lsass.exeC:WINDOWSSystem32Ati2evxx.exeC:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exeC:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exeC:WINDOWSsystem32spoolsv.exeC:WINDOWSExplorer.EXEC:Program FilesIntelModem Event MonitorIntelMEM.exeC:WINDOWSsystem32dlatfswctrl.exeC:Program FilesCreativeSBAudigy2Surround MixerCTSysVol.exeC:Program FilesCreativeSBAudigy2DVDAudioCTDVDDet.EXEC:WINDOWSsystem32CTHELPER.EXEC:WINDOWSSystem32DSentry.exeC:PROGRA~1mcafee.comagentmcagent.exeC:PROGRA~1COMMON~1AOLACSacsd.exeC:WINDOWSSystem32CTsvcCDA.exec:PROGRA~1mcafee.comvsomcvsrte.exeC:Program FilesCommon FilesDellEUSWSupport.exeC:Program FilesDellSupportAlertbinNotifyAlert.exeC:PROGRA~1MICROS~4GAMECO~1CommonSWTrayV4.exeC:PROGRA~1mcafee.comvsomcvsshld.exec:progra~1mcafee.comvsomcvsescn.exeC:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWorks SharedWkUFind.exeC:Program FilesDellMedia ExperiencePCMService.exeC:Program FilesMUSICMATCHMUSICMATCH Jukeboxmm_tray.exeC:Program FilesMusicMatchMusicMatch Jukeboxmmtask.exeC:Program FilesMSN MessengerMsnMsgr.ExeC:Program FilesSpyware Doctorspydoctor.exeC:Program FilesATI Multimediamainlaunchpd.exec:progra~1mcafee.comvsomcvsftsn.exeC:Program FilesMessengermsmsgs.exeC:WINDOWSwanmpsvc.exeC:WINDOWSSystem32MsPMSPSv.exec:PROGRA~1mcafee.comvsomcshield.exeC:WINDOWSsystem32wscntfy.exeC:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exeC:Program FilesMSNMSNCoreFilesmsn.exeC:Program FilesMSNMSNIAmsniasvc.exeC:Program FilesMSNMSNIAWAClientSideProxy.exeC:Program FilesHijackThis.exeR1 - Hi Daryll,The good news is that you have no virus'. The bad news is that you have alot of stuff running in the background. You need to look at each of these services and running programs to decide what you really need running and what can be shut down (alot of them can be shut down). FSAutostart is the tool to use for gaming... it can be configured to shut down services and programs before gaming. But the bottom line is that you can remove many of the programs from your start-up.The Texture_Bandwidth_Mult setting is used by many to make view loading quicker when changing views in the cockpit (i.e. when looking left or right). A higher value will make views load faster, but at a price. That price is stuttering (especially when the system must cache scenery such as when flying thru a turn). The default setting is 40. There is no perfect setting... this is totally dependent upon a users system. Just as an example, with my fast video card I can run a lower setting (because the system can load those scenery changes quickly when I look left or right while in cockpit). I use a value of 80 and do not suffer any stutters while in turning flight.Play around with the setting to find a value that works best for you and your hardware.Hope this helps,Greg
