J41 Paint Help .. Can't kill the shine!

Featured Replies

Working on some livery for my VA, I consider myself to be comfortable with Photoshop CS6, I was able to paint the PMDG 777 and the Twin Otter Extended with no issues at all. This one is throwing me for a loop and I cant figure out for the life of me what is causing the problem. I'm attaching screenshots to help show the issue I'm running in too. If I was painting a P-51 or something I'd probably be thrilled. These shots don't do the problem justice. This is an incredibly 'wet' or icey looking result.

This 2nd image was restarted with a vanilla PSD downloaded again from PMDG's website. I painted the Nacelles and put a simple red stripe on the rear. The same red RGB code was used yet they are totally different. No other edits were done, from there they were exported using the NVidia plugin for photoshop.

I've tried using both a WHITE and a BLACK for the alpha channel without success. I've never run into an issue like this and PMDG hasn't responded to my support ticket.

- I've Tried this on (2) different installs of FSX and also sent a copy off to a fellow VA pilot, he saw the same result so I've eliminated it being a hardware issue. I've got to be missing a rogue layer or something in photoshop

I'd appreciate any advice or guidance to find an updated paintkit.

Thanks in advance,

As you've already ruled out the alpha channel (which should be white for no reflectivity), looks like the bump mapping (spec) textures could be causing these effects.

I would recommend you copy an existing set of J41 textures and then save over them to see if that fixes it. Don't mess with any files that have "spec" in the file name.

Edit 1858 GMT:

I think your problems are with the PMDG_J41_Fuselage_T_Spec.dds and PMDG_J41_Master_T_Spec.dds files, make sure you follow the instructions supplied with the paint kit to create them:

...creating your spec map for this texture is simple... [copy and resize your fuselage texture] to 1024 x 1024 then fill this with black with Blending settings of Mode - Multiply and opacity set to 76%... Save your new spec map using
the DXT5 format...

I hope the above instructions fix your problems.

PS: I wouldn't post your e-mail address up on any publicly viewable webpage, as it makes it very easy for bots to harvest and subsequently spam.

Thanks Chris,

If your referring to adding a black layer, multiply and setting the opacity to 76% I have done that as well.

Have you checked the alpha layer on the spec.dds files? It should be generally dark.

I would recommend you open an existing J41 repaints' textures and compare yours to see if you can spot any obvious differences. DXTbmp is good for this, I find it more user friendly than the nVidia Photoshop plugin, you can set it as the default program to open .dds files.
