strange error message with P3D

Sounds like a .NET error of some sort. You need Microsoft.NET version 2 and SimConnect to be installed for OpusFSX and its SimConnect links to work.

Someone else said they needed a Simconnect.dll xml file in the sim folder for P3D to work.

You can check what versions of .NET you have installed by checking your c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework or Framework64 folders. You should see a v2.0.xxxxx folder in addition to the v4.0.xxxxx folder.

In the case of SimConnect, first make sure you have installed FSX or P3D along with its SP2 or installed the FSX Acceleration version, SimConnect is usually installed automatically with it. If you have mislaid or corrupted your SimConnect or are using OpusFSX on a client PC only for Client Side Weather Control (where FSX is not installed) then you can try installing it using the SimConnect.msi file within your OpusFSX folder.

Those exceptions generally mean it is unable to connect via SimConnect. Please check your P3D installation and set up, it appears you do not have a SimConnect in use. Nothing really to do with Opus just your SimConnect set up for your P3D installation. Check you have created all the necessary xml and cfg files for your P3D system.

There is absolutely no difference as far as Opus is concerned between connecting to FSX or any version of P3D. The SimConnect interface is the same and independent of the actual sim type. But you must make sure your sim is using SimConnect so there is something on the other end for Opus to connect to.

I clicked on the simconnect.exe on the Opus folder, which seems to have enabled weather, but it all is a milky gray with base set at 45000ft, which is obviously wrong,

I updated Opus to 3.36.1 yesterday, and I tested it today now with FSX as well

which now has the same problem, only that in FSX I get an error message

The weather theme could not be loaded. Please check that this file exists and try again

Sounds like you are using the new P3D volumetric fog ? If so then you should disable it and download + install the latest release upgrade version.

If you want to try the P3D volumetric fog effect then please check our SimForums topic on the matter, then download the latest beta and enable the Volumetric Fog option in the Weather Preferences.

Please note the P3D fog effect is not what everyone was led to believe. It is not compatible with weather engines that use multiple visibility layers. Hence we have produced a new beta to allow users to try the effect out, beta test and report their findings, eventually reporting back to LM. But you must read and follow the SimForums topic on the matter, there's too much to describe on multiple forums. We may also soon be adding a Volumetric Fog Scaling Factor, please see SimForums.

You must set up your FSXSERVER Configuration so that the weather file can be copied into the correct place.

Then you will not get an error message reporting that the file cannot be found within the sim when the weather update is issued.

Best also to disable the P3D Volumetric Fog effect and make sure you are using the latest release version.

Whether selecting FSX or P3D you MUST ...

Before running the sim, select the correct sim type in the Opus Configuration, identify the correct installation folder for the sim, restart the FSXSERVER program.

The latest release upgrade version is 3.36.1 dated 25th November.

The latest beta is version 3.37.0 dated 28th November.

You must use the latest release version for normal use with the P3D Volumetric Fog effect disabled in P3D (there is a problem with it when visibility layering is used).

You must use the latest beta version if you want to enable the P3D Volumetric effect enabled in P3D (there may still be a slight problem of the effect being a little severe and not matching the intended surface visibility). If you want to use this you must enable the volumetric fog effect in the Opus Weather Preferences dialog, you should also read and follow our SimForums topic on the subject. The next beta will include a Volumetric Effect Scale Factor for you to adjust but you must understand the implications before using it.

The VF effect is a new feature in P3D and there needs to be some further work and changes by LM before it will be able to be used with maximum flexibility. But its a great new feature and I'm sure it will prove a great asset to P3D.

I disabled  the Volumetric fog option, and both FSX and P3D seem to be loading fine, for the time being, it will remain off until you guys release a version that can use it, it is bit late now to do some more testing, tomorrow I´ll do some more and update this thread, thanks for your support :)

That's OK. The local report in the Spy window just shows the automated cirrus layer which is the only cloud layer in your current weather cell. The cell is only 16km square so is pretty small and the local report identifies weather that is injected to the NW of the nearest insertion point to you to match the way FSX works.

Best the consult Using The LWE and Recommended Practices which you can now access using the Question mark button in the Weather dialog.

Have a go at using the various weather maps and remember the sim will always bleed weather across cell boundaries and drag cloud boundaries along with it for a while on occasions. The are Lower Cloud Cover and Precipitation weather maps which you might find helpful.

Without seeing the weather map and seeing the weather update I would say the clouds look fine based on just the local cell weather report. The cloud bases and coverage are of course determined by the METARs, best to examine the Lower Cloud Cover weather map for a general idea of what cloud coverage and heights have been injected.

That's the only way to determine where the clouds should be.

updated and it is back to normal - I noticed that FSX and P3D react the same way if one is run after the other.

Going to test it a lot more this weekend, I am happy that Opus is working OK now.

Yes, you must select your sim type in the FSXSERVER program's Configure dialog and restart the program. This is the only way the program can know where to copy the OpusWeather files, the two weather files need to be copied into the simulators Weather\theme folder before the command to load them is issued. The latest software copies two weather files, any missing weather file will result in the above error message.

Stephen

The latest versions most likely just needed to be run correctly once to ensure the new weather file was copied and hence existed in the simulators Weather\theme folder. But the above procedure must be used at the moment when changing simulator type.
