What does this button offer in terms of options? Are you able to pick any location (altitude etc) to set up an approach scenario?

 

I currently have FSX Instant Approach and looks like P3D may already have something similar built in.

 

 

From memory, It lets you enter latitude, longitude coordinates, height, direction and speed. So if you slew to a location, note down the coordinates you can set up all the rest. I've probably forgotten something lol but that should be enough to give you the idea.

You can also drag and drop the plane icon on the map to set the coords.

It  brings up the same (similar) Map window you can access in-game in FSX.
