December 22, 200421 yr Here are some thoughts of mine I like to share with you, maybe you can comment them.Let me start by telling you the latest story, when I discovered yesterday that I have a general graphics problem.Maybe one of my problems is that being an IT specialist since many years now, I think I know computers and operating systems (and programs).Okay, here we go:In my attempt to stay "on the bleeding edge", I always use the latest drivers, programs etc., and I always do some fine-tuning of Windows (where FS unfortunately runs, other OSs would probably be better) and FS itself. One cannot have enough FPS, so I once decided to put "panel_as_texture=0" into FS9.cfg (in fact I have this since FS2002), and I never encountered any problems with this.Until I read an article stating that this line transfers some of the work the graphics adapter should do to the CPU, what in the end lets FPS drop.So I quickly changed this setting, and I was happy to see some 6 FPS more. I have to say that I did a lot of experimenting already, trying to find out what parameters in both the graphics driver's settings and in FS9 affect FPS the most, but I never tested with panel_as_texture.So far, so good, did some test flights, when I suddenly discovered that on the upper and right edge of some panels, there was a gap of 1 or two pixels where the outside bleed through.Took me some time to verify it's not only one panel that shows this behaviour, and then I started to look for the root cause. That was not so easy: I use a small program which sets the PCI latency timers of some PCI bus components to specific values (besides, another interesting field of exploration, I still don't see any big changes when using other numbers here), then I have set some values in the BIOS which could affect the graphics adapter, then I have the Catalyst 4.12 with the Catalyst Control Center for my Radeon 9800 Pro (Sapphire), and on top of that I also run the ATI Tray Tools and RadLinker (maybe not so good to use all that together).Anyway, I stepped back to basics by un-installing and disabling one after the other, to end up with the fact that as soon as I enable Anti Aliasing, this bad effect occurs. No matter if the graphics driver does AA or FS9 (by enabling it in the "Hardware" tab).Oh forgot to mention that as soon as "panel_as_texture=0", the line I had many months, is back in FS9.cfg, the effect is gone - costing me 6+ FPS, of course. So here I am, having downloaded Catalyst 4.11 and 4.12 without the Control Center, the Omega and DNA drivers, and I hope any of them would get me past this cruelty. You see my dilemma here? I drove with a false setting for many months, during which I constantly updated my drivers, and ended up discovering a general error. Now I cannot longer tell what component is the cause, maybe the whole mess started long time ago, I just didn't see because of the wrong parameter?!That was the first, my second issue is about "display" in FS9 in general.Like many of you, I have some add-on scenery (mesh, airports) and landclass, both free-and payware.I always thought I'm on the safe side, doing everything right (my story of my latest FS9 re-install nightmare is another one, maybe I'm gonna tell at another time). But one day, during the installation of the FS Genesis' Hawaii package, my view of things changed.Of course, I do some before/after screenshots when installing new scenery to be sure something changes towards the positive side. When you read the instructions of FSG's Hawaii, it tells you to put some files into the default FS9 folders other than "Addon Scenery".Being a clever guy, I thought that wouldn't be so important, so I copied everything into its own folder and put it under the addon scenery.Everything went fine, then I decided to try out what the Hawaii installation readme says, just for fun.And guess what: there was a difference, a small one, I agree, but there was one. Some textures looked different. From this moment on, I'm not longer sure whether what I see on my FS9 is correct or not. Even if I see something changed for good, I cannot longer be sure. And that's something that leaves me in some uncertain state since I don't exactly know how to make it better...Enough for now, I'll continue with my FS9 re-install story later ;-))Andreas Andreas, LOWW - Nihil sumus et fuimus mortales. December 22, 200421 yr Author If you're talking about the payware FSGenesis Hawaii package then yes, you need to change some FS default files to get the full benefits. If you don't do that you will not get the updated coastlines, and possibly not the better mesh either. BTW this package looks spectacular with American Data - the rivers and roads align perfectly with the mesh and the new accurate coastlines. As for the other problem - haven't seen this myself but then I barely use the 2D panel enough to notice such things. Maybe it's a general bug or conflict with FS9 and the Catalyst drivers? Will have to check I also get it. -
