February 4, 200521 yr G'day from down under.A couple of quick quest for interest sake just to cure some curiosity#1 How much addon scenery {mesh and general scenery} is too much, and to what extent does it start to effect the running of flightsim#2 Same quest but this time relating to a/c installed , how much is too much please i understand everyones set up is different and im not looking for a too technical response, just a general curiosity as to how much we all keep....please just respond with say.....ie ive got xxx addon scenery and xxx of mesh and i keep xxx aircraft just to start ive got 37 addon a/c not inc default and 7 mesh 37 scenery files The reason i ask this is because i have removed a lot of a/c and scenery files just to make room, many of which are very good quality .All just to avoid the slow creap of too much installed and possibly a slow increase in loading times. regards
February 4, 200521 yr I'll let someone else answer your basic question, I'm sure there is a limit to the number of scenery files (I seem to remember someone saying it's a little over 300?) but maybe there is not such a limit with aircraft. I know more aircraft increases the loading time of FS as you say, but I don't think the presence of unused ones affects the actual running of FS but I could be wrong. You could temporarily move planes to a different new folder called hangar (or whatever you want) so it keeps them available for use by putting them back in the aircraft folder when required, rather than having to reinstall them. Obviously you shouldn't move aircraft that have panels and/or sounds aliased to them. For that reason you should keep all default aircraft where they are. With scenery, you could just disable add on scenery in the scenery library and enable it when you want to use it. I think mostly it would depend on how much disk space you can or cannot afford to give up to add ons.
February 4, 200521 yr Im not a techy but I think add-ons are only limited by the size of the hard disk. Although I know the more you have the longer the load-time, thats something Ive noticed as I add more to my sim.I have about 25GB worth of add-on scenery and another 30GB worth of planes and apart from slow FS9 load-time the sim runs as smooth & fast as a purring kitten :)Just keep your HDD defragged regularly and scrub it of unessesary junk using a good utility (one that makes auto-backups) and all will be good.:)
February 4, 200521 yr Might I suggest a product like Flightsim Add-On Manger (FS-AOM). You use it to easily remove/replace aircraft, panels, sounds, AI and scenery to keep your FS9 setup slim & trim. Been using it for years.
February 4, 200521 yr The only real impact adding more and more addons has is to the loading time of FS.For the runtime performance the number of addons doesn't matter. What does matter is the combination of addons loaded at any one time.A highly complex aircraft in combination with high resolution mesh, high detail cloud packs, extended water textures and effects, and a photoreal ground plus maybe a high detail airport addon will mean your performance drops.Run a low detail airport, aircraft, mesh, etc. in another area even while all those highdetail addons are installed and you won't notice they're there.
February 5, 200521 yr Good day!I've got 720 entries in my scenery.cfg and 178 aircraft, all workingfine, as mentioned on onother post here, it takes a little whileto load, but my systems handles it well . Joaquin Blanco Intel Core i9-9900K at 5Ghz, Corsair Hydro H100i RGB PLATINUM CPU cooler, Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E,Motherboard, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB GDDR6, G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB DDR4 3200MHz Memory, 500GB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS M.2 PCIe,2TB Samsung 860 QVO Solid State Drive, 2TB, 2 x Samsung 860 Evo 2TB, 1 x 1TB Samsung 860 Evo, Corsair RM650x 80 PLUS Gold 650W PSU.
February 5, 200521 yr Thanks everyone for your comments, very much appreciated. This gives me some reassurance on wether im on my way to bogging down my flightsim or not . The system i use handles my addons quite well , even with many frame rate sucking extras but i havent realy noticed any big delays in loading........yet.You have all answered my main concern being how it effects fsim once up and running.Well what can i say but ......ive got some old ac i need to install. Many thanks Happy flights
February 5, 200521 yr 311 scenery folders439 aircraft folders (total)lotsa meshThe alarming data though is that my FS9 folder is 55.1GB containing 696,548 files in 6,206 folders - still works great but there's a lot there to go wrong :)I managed to get to a limit with the scenery in FS2002 Pro at something like 335 if my memory served well but so far am still going in FS9 but not quite close to the previous version limitation. I see others have laready exceeded this number so hopefully there will not be a limit in FS9 for the additional scenery.
February 5, 200521 yr Unreal ,good to hear Have to agree with you on "works great but theres a lot that can go wrong" Im sure im not alone when i say ive done something and thought its ok not to back up that small file, only to find out its not so small when it effects something else you cant see.........aghhhh the joys of reinstalling..now i have backing up down to an art....439 a/c thats a good effort.....good to hear. Thanks
February 5, 200521 yr Actually its amazing how the sim runs *at all* without fault with all these gazillion add-ons! :)We of course only get frustrated when things go to pot but we should stop for a moment and pat FS9 on the back for working nicely when it does!
February 5, 200521 yr I had to upgrade to a 120gig harddrive dedicated for FS2004 use only. Yes, there's a lot that could go wrong. That's why I use Drive Image and have a complete snapshot of my entire FS drive "just in case" the unthinkable ever happens. Has happened only once in two years and of course it was when I had no back up plan... ah live and learn the hard way.
February 5, 200521 yr hey Nevin Was only just saying this the other day . with all the scenery,a/c,weather and other addons its is amazing how it all comes together. when i upgraded from fs02 i didnt wish to lose other addons to another fsim but here i am with completely new ones ...????? about fs05/06 or fs10 .....will probaly apdate, but as it stands ,im extremely happy with fs9.......MY WIFE ISNT ' HA HA see ya
