prepar3d no surface wind gusts

Featured Replies

In Prepar3d 1.4 the surface wind setting shows 10 gusting 25 after opus weather download but on awos in sim there are no gusts mentioned and no gusts felt in flight, nor are there any gusts mentioned in Opus weather reports. Does anyone have similar problem or solution.

Thanks,

Eric

There is a mistake in my original post- There are 25 knot gusts reported in Opus weather but no gusts in flight or reported in atis in sim.

We have answered your post on SimForums but here is a summary...

You will only 'feel' gusts if you have enabled the Opus DHM and possibly the Bump Aircraft turbulence, best to check your DHM dialog and adjust the level of turbulence there. You will also see ASI fluctuations if you have the 'in sim' turbulence and thermal effects enabled.

You would only feel extra turbulence at very low level in flight. If Opus says wind gusts then Opus has injected wind gusts in the surface wind layers, typically up to several thousand feet AGL, but restricted to the surface layers. Surface winds do NOT effect the upper winds at all, the higher you go the less effect they have. Opus gives added turbulence effects to account for this. The sim of course is responsible for controlling the actual gusting wind, again only noticeable near the surface.

The Opus Spy window will also report the current turbulence strength and frequency which will be greater due to the gusting winds, the increase depends on both the steady and gusting strength and your current elevation.
