February 17, 200521 yr I have a general problem using grass strips for my bush flights. Many of them are just a flat rectangle surrounded by trees. And it's these trees which drive me mad: they're in almost all cases way too close to the flat area.To avoid scratching the tree tops during the landing, the altitude needed is so big that when extending the trajectory of the landing path, the airplane would rather settle onto ground where actually the and of the airstip is!That meand either to dangeroudly try to fly between trees (which always look different because of their nature of being autogen objects) or to start a risky dive after crossing the tops of the treeas nearest to the runway. The airstrips around KSEA have a spacier clearance area, and it's much easier to land there. Is there a way to expand the area free of trees around airstrips?I know of an EXCLUDE= switch, but wouldn't that exclude a rectangular area with two sides exactly parallel to the meridian? What if my airstrip has an angle of e.g. 45 degrees?Andreas Andreas, LOWW - Nihil sumus et fuimus mortales. Respice, lector: In nihil ab nihilo quam cito recidimus.
February 17, 200521 yr Ahem. Surely that is the idea?! To come in high, slow with the flaps and open windows, drop down like a feathery stone onto the strip and come to a stop 1/2 way along it!!
February 18, 200521 yr I agree it's fun landing there. But I suppose in reality, such airstrips don't exist. How comes the default airstrips around KSEA have larger clearance areas? Much more realistic IMHO.Glad that it's a game, if I were a pilot facing such airstrips, I'd be _very_ nervous during landing...Andreas Andreas, LOWW - Nihil sumus et fuimus mortales. February 18, 200521 yr Many of those fields in reality have trees close to them, it all comes down to practicing steep approaches in shortfield aircraft like the Pilatus Porter and the DHC Beaver.Come in steep, flare just at the last moment, and settle her down with minimum forward speed.Takes practice but can be done.
