AEU7 textures, "lite" conversion process

Featured Replies

I'm a little bit confused by the complexity of your directions. Dxtbmp has a "Send to editor" command. Is there any reason not to use this to do this editing? If you do, you don't have to worry about saving the files or the alpha channel, everything gets taken care of for you. Thanks for the directions,Thomas

You can modify the directions to suit different ways of doing it, as normal, there are many, many, different ways of achieving the same goal, mine is not the right, or only way, but its the way I do it.Dan.

Well, I for one can say that this trick didnt work at all for me. Still getting about 1-2 second total freeze while the textures reload in spot view. And this is with 256MB on the GFX... :(Oh well back to the old version 6 that only gave minor stutters..

Thanks dan :)Got it now....it was the alpha chanel that was giving me trouble, but now I've got it sussed how to resize it!!The resized textures work well, and look great still! Thanks of course, must go to Chris for the great source textures :) :)

I think some of the stuttering is due to the AI% in conjuction with AU7 textures. My AI% was set at 93% and I was experiencing stutters. If I lowered it below 50 it helped. I am still tweaking it.Although, the traffic at the airport is more important than the textures to me. I will proabably copy the FS Standard ones back.Barry

Ok, still a bit confused. I loaded, converted, edited and saved the texture. My confusion is how to then save it as either DXT1 or 3 using the DXTBMP program. Dan, care to share some light on this for me. Thanks.

Hi Lamont,Since no one else has jumped in yet:in DXTBmp select File/Save Extended Image. The "File Type" box will allow you to select DXT1 or DXT3.Hope this helps.

After trying this process, I was fairly happy with the terminal textures, but the runways lost a lot of fidelity. I compromised.I shrunk the texture sizes for the terminals, and used AEU 6 Express for the tarmac and runway textures. All is good. Thanks again to Chris, and this thread should not be a slight against him in anyway. Unfortunately I don't have yet the system to fully run FS in it's glory, so this is merely a way for me to enjoy a sample of what it can be, while maximizing my performance on the sim.maximum eye candy at minimum cost is my mantra. (Ok, shallow I know, but still....)

Thanks Don, I'll give it a go.

Wow, great tip! Thanks!I shrunk all the large textures, and was impressed with the increased smoothness. No doubt there is some loss of fidelity, but I think I'd have to compare them side by side to notice it.* Orest-~~~~~~~~~Orest Skrypuchvirtual.united.comUAL1445 Staff ORDFO
