New to the game, couple of questions

Featured Replies

Loving it so far, but I can't find a plane I was hoping was in there.  A couple years ago I took a couple flights from Knoxville to Atlanta and back.  $ flights all together.  I rode on a small, jet passenger plane for these flights.  I thought it could have been like a DC-10 or DC-9, but I can't recall and I see no planes like this in FSX.  Can someone tell me what would be a normal short hop jet that would make this type run?  It was twin enjine i think, probably a hundred to 125 passengers.

Also, having trouble with ils landing, but only the part about what to turn off and when on the AP console.  I know how to get the runway ils frequency and get it put in to the radio stack at Nav 1.  Just don't know what to do after I hear the morse code type signal.

I want this because I want to be able to have it line up to the runways.  I have bad eye sight and can't see them too well and I  am only using an Xbox 360 controller.  I don't know if youcan get lined up using GPS, can you, and if so is it easier than using ils?  I can also get fairly far in GPS, can put in the destination code and activate it and have it take me to the airport, I just don't know if I can take it further and line up.

Thanks for any help, now off to play.

Hi, and welcome to AVSIM!

As for the first question, I do not know, but for short hops the CRJ which comes with FSX might be quite suitable (much more likely than the DC-10, I guess ).

As for #2: Depending on the aircraft and what it is equipped with, you will either have the indicator in the VOR gauge (if that thing is actually able to display glide slopes, I think not all are), in the VOR mode of the ND (navigation display), or below and on the right of the artificail horizon in the PFD. It basically consists of 10 dots, five of them form a horizontal and the other five a vertical line. Then there is also a "diamond" in each line, usually pink; this indicates your aircraft's position relative to the ILS LOC (horizontal) and GS (vertical). Now, if you can hear the Morse code of the ILS, you will need to closely monitor the indicators - from that point on you're within the reach of that sender. As soon as the diamonds start to move (typically the horizontal indicator should start moving first), you will need to align your aircraft with the RWY heading; the indicators will only show your position for reference, but you (or the autopilot) will have to do the flying.

If you want to do it on AP (which I'd highly recommend for the first flights, because you can concentrate on what it should look like when you land the plane), you'll need to switch on the LOC or NAV hold button - in the default(-ish) aircraft you'll need to be in NAV mode rather than GPS - as soon as the horizontal indicator starts moving. The aircraft should then align itself with the runway; however, you're not quite done yet: You still have to monitor the vertical indicator; as soon as that starts moving, you have to actiavte the APP® button, which will tell the AP to follow both the LOC and GS component of the ILS.

Typically, you would disengage the autopilot at somewhere between 1500 and 1000ft above ground level and hand-fly the rest, but for the beginning, as said before, I'd really recommend to keep the AP on until touch down, just to get an impression of that works.

I hope the above helps.

Kind regards,

Florian
