Aaah....you know what I think?

I think you are intercepting final approach with LNAV?

right?

So what you need to do is

1) use Heading Select BEFORE you intercept final.

2) Then, while in HDG mode, you press the APP mode.

The APP button SHOULD be pressed before the localizer is captured!

The whole purpose of the APP mode IS to capture the LOC and then the GS.

Without APP mode you will continue to fly your heading for ever, or you continue on your LNAV track which looks like you intercepted the LOC, but you have not!

I think you have picked an aircraft that is a little too advanced for you at the moment.

(I am not being mean here.)

So you should at least try to read some of the FCTM (Flight Crew Training Manual) or look for some videos on you tube. Or you can buy a professional made video of the 777 being operated on a real flight on a real airline.

You can arm APP before localizer capture.  That isn't your problem.  I think the FMC setting you are referring to is "GS Capture before Loc."  "Yes" might help if you are approaching too high and you don't capture the localizer before you intersect the glideslope.  But it's much better to be low enough that when the glideslope comes alive you are below it, and you capture the localizer before you capture the GS.

Some questions:

1) Are you seeing the localizer and glideslope indications on the ND in APP mode and on the PFD?  Are you sure that the ILS is tuned?

2) When you start your approach ten miles out are you higher than 3,000 ft above the runway altitude?  3,000 ft at ten miles out should put you close to being on the glideslope.
